Ok, I'll make one. For those not familiar w/Xandros, Xandros is a distro that seeks to replace MS Windows on the desktop. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. EVERY desktop-based Linux distro does the same thing, right? Wrong.

Xandros does something nothing else does - it allows you to join a Windows-based domain and gain rights to domain resources. They use a heavily modified version of Samba 3 and it's awesome. In addition, Xandros directly supports Crossover Office - for those that absolutely need MS Office.

There is an Open Circulation version available on the Xandros site that will let you play with this for free (I'm downloading the new version now). If you have a Windows-based network and are looking for alternatives to XP, check out this distro.

well...

several distros are capable of doing this... i hav done it with debian. the problem? a six pack was 1/4 of the way through the setup process. im not a linux pro but i know my way around, this definatly sounds worthy of atleast trying out.

yep

xandros is one of the better ones out there! linspire likes to claim they have linspire beat hands down but xandros simply works and works well... integrated network browser in the file manager and everything.... very nice
i even use my libranet disks to install software on my xandros box....works fine as long as I dont go overboard ;)

If you were to compare to Windows.

I find Linspire to be more like Windows 95-ME and Xandros to be more like NT and 2000. Xandros is VERY good.

It has the best configuration for Active Directory of any version of Linux. You can do the same things with any version if you tinker with Samba. But if you just want to plug it in and join a domain just like and just as fast as a Windows 2000 machine, Xandros is a sure bet!

A really nice distro

I'm writing this on Xandros 3 Deluxe and I love it. This is a distro that just works. I don't have to play with the OS, I just get work done. It's great.

The business edition looks really cool. If you want linux in an MS shop, Xandros is the way to go. I've never had a Linux flavor integrate better. It's easy to mount Active Directory shares and print to the print servers. It lets me do my work faster and better than Windows did so I'm happy.

Finally!

"Finally!" I would say. I'm happy Xandros Desktop BE 2.0 user and nothings more apealing than simplicity introduced with the
Xandros networking and integration in Windows Server based LANs. I've installed it on couple aging Windows98 boxes ( donated to the church where I used to work) just to circumvent licencing issues and they are all hoocked to the Windows 2000 Small Business Server with MS Exchange 2000 . No problems whatsoever!
Latest Linux Business package from Xandros is something which is really worth every single penny and I think it'll be up an running on other boxes - very soon.

Xandros oce is amazing as a free download. I am a Mandriva user first and foremost, but I just love the simplicity of the Xandros system.... stick the CD in the drive and I think it was 4 clicks later, a fully implemented Linux system.... nice..

Xandros has only ever let me down once, when I tried to get the kernel-2.6.11-k7 and replace the included one, but this also failed on Linspire (badly) and Mepis. ;)

damn close

probably the closest to a fully functioning w/o tweaking linux I have seen.... not the fastest, coolest, etc...etcc... which would make it JUST like windows! ;)
