Along with the release of the new Windows Vista beta, developers are being treated to technologies to create applications for the new operating system. Microsoft last week gave developers access to the WinFX Runtime Components Beta 1 and the WinFX SDK. FlexBeta has a video of Vista beta 1.

Something doesn't look right about new windows zooming in like that. I want them to just appear. Zoom out when I'm minimizing them if you want, but when I click something to make a new window appear, that's user input that should have an instant response.
I can imagine that getting old really, really fast after a week of every new window zooming in at your face like that.

compared to OSX and even Project looking glass which has been freely avaliable for a quite a while.
Try the LG3D webstart, all you need is Java5 and your good to go.

Slightly different color scheme and effects, but ultimately, it's still the same XP-look. Compared to MacOS X, it's totally unimaginative (overdressed 89SE/Me). Now, what is it they're supposedly going to be "copying" from MacOS X (remember the whole "Redmond, start your copiers." banner thing at the Tiger Premiere)? I don't really see a single thing! Nothing about Vista even remotely looks like MacOS X, to me.

Look at the 'back' and 'forward' buttons in Windows Explorer.... they're exactly like the 'open' / 'close' / 'minimize' widgets in OS X windows, with an arrow. Some note the placement of the search interface... not nearly as good IMHO... For that matter, the whole 'glassy' / 'aquaish' treatment can be found everywhere in Vista... Of all the infinite possibilities for texture, why did they choose to ape Aqua? Can they think of nothing on their own? Have you seen RSS in IE 7? Way too similar to Safari RSS.... what about their search results page? Their lame-ass version of the 'genie effect' is yet another example - and like the 'recycle bin' before it, not nearly as effective (before you ask - "Recycle Bin"???? what, do your files get recycled? Personally I prefer mine "Trash"ed) Again, yes, I know this is Beta1, final look and feel are a ways off... it's my opinion that they'll only copy more. To me, it's just totally annoying...
