Microsoft's aim is to put OS on every desktop.
Mac's aim is to put the most beautiful GUI on every desktop.
Linux's aim is to put the most useful OS on every desktop.
(Think about it, why are there so many options and configurations? Because SOMEONE still finds it useful.)
Granted, I'd love to know who uses the XT hard disk support in the kernel.
its there, and supported, your dont HAVE to use it.. so why remove the code? The same can go for any feature.. Linux is only as bloated as you make it, assuming you compile your own kernel, or use a custom-class distro, as apposed to the bloat-class distros such as redhat (yes, I know its fedora now), or mandrake(and yes i know its mandriva now).
Google Secure Access is simply a PTPP client, which auto configures server, username, and password over https.
You can even connect using the built in capabilities of OS X - http://www.kevinstock.com/osx/googlevpn/
