PDAs, Cellphones, Wireless Billed as the smallest personal computer available, OQO launched the second version of its pocketable pen-based computer system on Tuesday. Measuring in at 4.9" (12.4cm) long and 3.4" (8.6cm) high by just under an inch (2.5cm) thick and weighing 14 ounces (397g), the OQO Model 01+ is the tiniest commercially available system to be running a full version of Windows XP.

If it runs full-version Windows XP, this means you can install other OS on it. I always wondered.

Just to clarify: The OQO is not an "XP computer" but runs Linux or other operating systems as well. In fact, with Linux you are supposed to get a much better battery life out of it.

It looks good and useful. I'd love to be able to have Mac OSX on it though. ( if you look close enough at the video you can see towards the end where they show shipping, the window is skinned to look like the Mac OS Aqua interface. Cool ! )

I prefer a laptop over a small handheld computer like this. Portable computers are nice; however, after getting my first PDA I didn't take long to realize that once you hit a certain size, going smaller only makes things less useful.

It may be good for some people, but it's unlikely to be for any average computer consumer.

Just watched the video and the specs, it sure looks like a great computer. Personally I would have liked it more if the ethernet jack was not on the dock but on the device itself.

I agree that the lack of on-device ethernet is unfortunate. So is the entire lack of TV-out.

Isn't this created by a company started by an old MS exec?

I can't wait for the Nokia 770 to get more power because it costs 5 times less than this OQO and provides the same screen resolution. I can live without the keyboard.

"battery life is 3 hours"

Impossible. Maybe 3 hours while in sleep mode.
I am guessing the battry life is 20-40 mins. In addition, the display would not be as bright as it appears from the pics.

Moreover, to run windows xp they will have to implement a classic x86 machine with all these hundreds of instructions and simulate PCI bus and IDE controllers and all different kinds of interrupts even though they might not exist or might be unnecessary. This is not an option for handheld.

They would have been better off building their own machine, kinda used strong arm or intel xscale and compile Linux as a native os for their machine.

For the mean time, my Nokia phone browses the web just fine.

They are using 1Ghz crusoe. The only way to have x86 instruction set in a handheld is to emulate it =)

I'd be hard pressed to replace my trusty Psion series 5. The keyboard on the Psion is more like a somewhat miniturised laptop keyboard.

See: http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/pda/psionser5.htm - for example.

The keys have a decent amount of travel and it is practical to type up an essay on the machine. Psions forever!
