YellowTAB has released a service pack for its Zeta operating system, bumping the version number to 1.1. This .pdf (in German, English version not (yet) available) describes the changes in a detailed fashion. In addition, "due to the unexpected amount of interest in yellowTAB's VideoEditor, we have decided not to release a stand-alone ProVersion. Instead, the ProVersion and its many anxiously awaited features will be integrated into our Zeta DeluxeEdition release."

It installed without issue and did in no way damage the OS.
However, I did need to reinstall my copy of MDR before that would work propperly again...
The update has sorted out many of the issues I had with R1.0, such as apps taking down the whole OS, especially net apps.
Came with Firefox 1.6 as well, which so far has worked flawlessly.

Bryan Varner and Andrew Bachman are the two I know of working on the Sun Java port for BeOS, and are officially recognized by Sun as the developers. If yT has the source code from way back when, they don't have it with Sun's blessing, and they aren't likely to be as far along as Bryan and Andrew are, either.
Bryan and Andrew are doing this on their own time, without pay. They are, however, the most promising route at this time, and they had quite a bit that was done and able to show the results (but they could not and did not distribute binaries or source to anyone, per terms of NDA) they have thus far, though quite incomplete in a large number of things that need to exist to be blessed by Sun. I know nothing about Zeta and Java. I do know something (har har) about BeOS and Java.
YellowTab has stated (well, Bernd has stated) "ve half our own people vorking on jawa" in at least one video-taped interview. To say this was a shock to me would be an understatement. At one time it was my understanding that YellowTab was going to be working with beunited.org in the java port. It is my impression that this was smoke and mirrors, and I've not seen anything concrete to back that up. Indeed, instead I see video of Bernd saying the opposite. I'd like to meet those people they have working on "jawa" I've got some questions I'd like to pick their brain on. I'd really like to know how much they've managed to get working. I find it odd that YT would claim to have java and never show a screenshot -- they seem to like showing screenshots of their (multiple) media applications way before their finished...
If YellowTab does somehow have a hold of our source tree, it's my understanding they would need to negotiate a license to see, modify, etc. the source from Sun. Without that, anything they do with it would put them on very, very shaky legal ground.
Even if the source did somehow leak, it's functionality would be seriously limited compared to what's sitting on my box at home. We're constantly making improvements to the J2SE implementation as well as the HotSpot VM. Since the demo at WalterCon (where we hit the per team thread limit without crashing the VM) we've fixed several crashing bugs in HotSpot.
Andrew and I have been the most active (Andrew is a MACHINE!) on the port, but there are others who have contributed in the past, and we got a few new recruits recently that we're hoping pull through.

Small little fixes here and there, but it does wonders on making the overall experience better. Customised folder icons in Deskbar menu, InfoPooper gives more information (anyone know how to customise time the popup is displayed???), better wireless support for shitty networks, better CIFS, the speed of drawing SVG icons seems much better, overall disk navigation feels, well, like BeOS (which is a good thing). These are things that I've noticed during the first hour of usage.
From the read me (also available in english as pointed out elsewhere), they've fixed the multiprocessor issue, RAID, USB and other issues, so this is a welcome update.
On the plus side, there are minor graphical touches placed here and there, which add to the overall polish and feel of Zeta. The graphical patch installer is charming to view. Good work. Now this is what R1 shuold have been. yellowTab are learning, and hopefully will be around to be the biggest Haiku partner.

If you replace the emuxki driver, don't forget to remove the emu10k driver if you also use a sb live card.
The emuxki driver in Zeta does _not_ handle the live, as they use the emu10k driver for that, which has better support for the extended features of the live card then the emuxki driver.
So if you're using a Live card, it is generally better to stick to the included drivers.

Yes, the service pack seems to have installed easily. I rebooted before I installed it. I launched the installer which I found very nicely done. The install proceeded smoothly. It asked if I wanted to keep radio stations located on the Zeta toolbar menu which I selected.
Install seemed to take only a few minutes but I did not time it.
It requested a reboot and everything seemed fine. Firefox is upgraded to a more current edition 1.6a1.

Yeah they've put new emuxki drivers in there so Audigy works (kinda). You might want to replace them with the ones from the Haiku build factory, they tend to work wayyyy better..

Something along the lines of Cubase or Sonar.
I'm most satisfied with Zeta: it looks great, has all the basic apps, is super simple to use, and it recognized all my hardware... even some old (win95/98 era) devices that xp doesn't. It recognizes my NTFS partitions too.
Oh yeah, zeta need one more app: a file manager along the lines of the one in Xandros. That crappy Apple like FM is for shit.
