Actually, the FreeBSD community at large feels Beastie shouldn't be replaced, even if it scares away some people.

Well, you should check your sources:
"Beastie will continue to represent the FreeBSD Project as our mascot. We won't kill Beastie. The closest logo-like thing that we have now is shown below, and we are looking for other options to be used like there. The new logo design may or may not include Beastie, or even a stylized representation. Again, Beastie is still alive!"

This is cool! A very well thought out logo - the author was careful to take into consideration the possibilities of variations: on CD, shirts, boxes; customizations for various colors (see postcard theme here: http://logo-contest.freebsd.org/result/640-1.png ); customization themevize (see the security logo).
All in all: it sure took some time
- but the end result is satisfying. I like the crystal-look as well - we now have a cool kmenu button replacement
))

I bet you want the good old days of X guis back
+1. Beastie logo was far better IMO. Likewise, former NetBSD logo was simply amazing. Those former logos had a lot of character and was cool in a retro way (just like the movie Tron is, or the game Darwinia is). Shiny well-curved logos might be trendy but lack in soul.
After all the logo is supposed to reflect the character of the FreeBSD project and the FreeBSD user -- not the user of the iCrap which looks shiny and does everything for you in a mediocre way.
Marketing, which includes an ever changing logo is a major element of making a product popular; you may not like it, most people resent it when something they know are are comfortable with changes, but it happens eventually.
Things change just like people die, it's a fact of life even if it's not one you like. FWIW though I know what it feels like when something you like changes in a way you hate.
I don't really like this logo, it is bland and somewhat devil looking anyways for those who would be bothered by that. A good logo should be stylish and easy to draw with a pencil. This logo needs light shading to have any form at all--done 2-d it's just a plain circle with two coned horns, and no eyes--a beast blind to the world.
The best thing is, logos are not that important, FreeBSD will be as good as it was anyways, and if you like Beastie, you can use it for whatever you'd like, the image of beastie has not been banished.

Who's dying?
Ok it's not a ball; but it's very similar nonetheless.
For anyone who might be wondering, this is the logo of an italian singer, and it has been his previous band's logo from early nineties to around 2000.

Personally I dont see anything wrong with the current FreeBSD "Beastie".
I find it very interesting that the winning design was chosen as a result of 62 votes, out of 181.
I wonder why FreeBSD allowed such a small electorate to determine such an important issue? I don't how many FreeBSD users there are in the world, but perhaps a more representative selection process would have been "better"?
Mac did the glass thing. Now everybody wants to do the glass thing. Let Mac have the glass thing. That's the only thing Mac has. Oh, and ipods. They can have them too.
Unfortunately, the beastie puts off religious nut jobs. So I understand that they needed to either replace the logo or try to to spook anyone out with the logo.
The best logo is debian, even though noone knows what it means.
Hopefully they have some other variations of logos available. Don't they know anything about screen printing? Red on red? Come on. I'm very disappointed.
I agree with the previous posting saying it makes the OS seem cheap.
What says a mascot can't be part of a logo? Maybe you should have a look at this:
http://www.michelin.com/portail/home/home.jsp
Now, who should get a clue, brainiac?
And btw, I agree with the majority; This lame attempt at logo really sucks. "iBall with cones poised as horns" Seriously, WTF?
Please people get this into your heads. THERE WAS NOT AN "OLD" LOGO. There is a mascot and his hame is Beastie and he shall reign over the animal kingdom of mascots ;D
In short, this is the FIRST and ONLY logo the freebsd project has ever had! As such it is very nice as it also gives the nod to the mascot.
Beastie will remain. I'm honestly surprised about the amount of people that apparently is illiterate and unable to read properly.
Who cares of the logo or mascot!
Seriously, the only thing that turns me on (besides
attractive women), is FreeBSD itself.
Not the mascot or the logo!
(I'm still wondering how a pair of cones and a sphere
can be considered sexy...Reminds me of Madonna and her
"missile cones" outfit!).
The claim that FreeBSD did not originally have a logo is simply ridiculous. It is the mascot vs. logo posts which have no clue. Why do you think people showed such a uniform reaction to this new so-called logo on this thread? Because FreeBSD has always had a logo with the beastie mascot in it. Even if it has not officially been called so, it was there and was far smarter snd cooler looking than this new travesty of a logo.

Almost just as combustible!
I remember the contest annoucement some time ago,
and If my memory doesn't fail, there were 2 reasons for a new logo.
The "Bestie" logo and "pet" was a comic, and wasn't considered enough "serious". FreeBSD community
intended to promote FreeBSD in companies and the corporate world (means "jobs" for you "hackers" !!!),
not just "Geeks" and universities.
This logo ("Bestie") was inspired in the "daemons", resident programs in *nix,
similar to the windoze services. (ok, ok, you *BSD guys, "daemons" are not "demons" !!!)
In marketing research, in order to promote a product or service, it is suggested not to use religion related concepts because there can be "conflicts" or hurt personal beliefs of the people to which is intended to sell the product.
Even that the "litle devil", I mean "daemon", may look innocent, some people may think not.
Personally speaking, I believe the new logo DIDN'T FULLFILL that 2 requirements. It's not enough
interesting for the "corporte world", and still is a "little devil", I mean a "little daemon",
in 3D and stylized...
I saw the annoucement some time ago, I was thinking in participate, and forgot, due to workload
:-(
Never tried FreeBSD, maybe I should... ;-)
What do you think ?

Ok.. The term daemon came from demon. In the very early UNIX days they called the background "helper" processes demons. This article eplains it a little bit (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=daemon). Why is FreeBSD's mascot a little demon looking guy? Because he represents a daemon and his pitch-fork represents process forking. This has been discussed too many times. It is not evil in any way, shape or form. Beastie lives! Now, as for that colorful little butterfly, that is pure evil! Beastie and Tux will take care of that.
Creating this logo, I did it how i like. I like beastie (buy the way, there were no beastie images in in finalists works). I just want to help the FreeBSd community. Wait a year, and you will see, that people likes this logo. This fun and candystyled logo
Even nerds.
I have plans to make whole new look to all freebsd related ideas.
All materials are coming soon at http://freebsdlogo.org

i guess a retail box will now blend in nicely next to something like mandrake n suse or whatever other distro. Personaly I would have just gone with the text in that font and kept the "nubby ball" out. The name in that typesetting is just fine. It's identifiable enough on its own. Beastie, AS THE MASCOT, will always be around of course, but replacing it on the wesite with the nubby ball...eeeesh. If you trying to market it as yet another windows replacement... well, I dont want to go off on a rant.
