Linux "Realm Systems has developed a portable computer likely to appeal to real geeks: a server so small it can fit in your pocket. This review is going to take a look at Realm Systems BlackDog. It is the smallest Linux server, weighing in at 1.6 ounces. It's smaller than the size of a PDA and can be plugged into the USB (Universal Serial Bus) port of any computer running Linux, Windows 2000 or Windows XP."

At first i thought this is useless device but after reading the review i can see great potential for it. All it needs now is a wireless NIC.

Well, why would you need wireless if you are conencted to anoter computer that does the routing for you?

I would like to have a bigger storage area instead so I could store stuff. 512 doesn't cut it... most memory sticks that are worth while are 1 or 2 Gigs.

True but it would be more flexible as a stand alone device. Perhaps Bluetooth would be better.

Very nice, too bad it does not come with a CF or MMC card port.

Also, does it work on OS X as a client?

No, not yet at least:

I agree, they should add a port for a CF or MMC card.

Did you actually read the FAQ?

It has an MMC slot...

And it DOES require a host PC, it does not have an ethernet port, it gets its power from USB.

Is the fullsize PC required to connect to the Internet?

Because if that's the case, I think it kind of defeats the purpose of using it as a webserver. (I want my servers to run standalone and consume the minimun amount of power possible)

Neat little device. I wonder if you can boot from it, and use kind of like a Live CD? That would be a good way to have everything, especially if you have some apps & data on another thumb drive. Just plug the both of them in, and away you go! Then take it with you when you leave, and not have to worry about leaving anything behind on a public computer in a hotel when you're away from home.

Not the smallest

This is not the smallest linux server available. The GumStix waysmall comes with Linux, and is only 90% the size of the BlackDog.

BlackDog:
.50” x 1.75” x 3.5” = 3.06 cu. in.
http://www.projectblackdog.com/product.html

GumStix:
3.25" x 1.4" x 0.6" = 2.73 cu. in.

Not entirely, to compete completely you'd also need the CF expansion board for the gumstix. Which would make it slightly larger (except there is no case for the combination)

This thing and company are tainted. I asked them to respond if the news reports and rumors were not accurate, and they didn't. Seals it for me.

It might be the (almost) smallest Linux server, but it is by no means the smallest Linux box (http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS8386088053.html) or smallest server (http://www.deviceforge.com/news/NS4222234168.html).
