The author must have been a DJ at one time because that's how the article seems to be written. The technical part is OK so far. Thanks for linking to it! I need to be familiar with this stuff because people will undoubtedly be asking me questions during the big digital TV push.

While this is a nice intro, it is basically a cut/paste (wikipedia maybe) of 'facts', many of which are incorrect and/or labeled incorrectly by the authors. Don't read too much in to it. For example. The DVB-T worldwide deployment graphic -- ATSC is not DVB-T. ATSC power consumption -- proven incorrect. ATSC mobile -- not currently possible. ATSC and DVB video being MPEG2 -- irrelevant (the transport can carry anything, H264, whatever).

...why did my comment about the relevance of this new item warrant being marked down to -5..? My point is totally valid. Given the lack of posts regarding this article I can only assume that the editors have marked me down. Is this assumption correct?
This website is about operating system news. Other than some mentions about MPEG2 compression there's very little in the article that is to do with computing

Unfortunately, the problem of these off topic comments about if a story belongs on osnews or not (like the kind of discussion we are having right now that completely ruins my story and it really angers me) is so widespread, that we have to do so. You should have never do that comment because it was not on topic. Look how we have ruined this story right now. I personally emailed you about it and instead of emailing me back, you replied HERE and contributed to this useless exchange of comments that it's off topic to the story. It's really sad.

Fair enough, but does it still justify marking the comment down to -5?
You violated the rules. Mod points are there in part to punish those who violate the rules. -5 is most likely the default for when staff mod down posts that can only disrupt the discussion. I don't see any justification for getting offended over this incident.

Brazil is also considering ISDB-T after finding it superior to both DVB-T and ATSC for their needs.
Brazil is finishing your decision now and most of the scientis involved in study would like to change MPEG-2 coder by a new and better H.264 encoder and using the rest of japanese standard.
