Windows Microsoft has changed the code-name for the next version of Windows after Vista from 'Blackcomb' to 'Vienna', according to company evangelist and blogger Robert Scoble. Blackcomb was named back in 2000, when Windows XP was still known as Whistler. But Microsoft says it needed a name that fit the 'Vista' theme.

XP is based on 2000. The 98 codebase was used for ME then abandoned.

Well, then trample this ...

If "Vienna" has a poorer recpetion than Windows ME, maybe we'll have to start calling it "Wienerwurst".

I don't think there's much chance of that happening. If they go for a Dutch city or town at all it'll probably be Amsterdam. Possibly with a cannabis themed desktop. I doubt they'd notice any other city or town in the Netherlands, largely because I've literally had the following conversation online:
Other: Where do you live?
Me: Groningen, The Netherlands
Other: Oh, where in Amsterdam is that?
Me: It's not in Amsterdam, just in the Netherlands.
Other: So it's like next to Amsterdam?

Hey, at least they didn't say Brussels...

I think it would be humorous for them to name the next version Rome. Just think of all the empire jokes we could make.

Speaking of which, isn't there an Archduke reference somewhere in the use of Vienna?

Heh obviously. I was just kidding.

Possibly with a cannabis themed desktop.

I hope not. Weed is for losers, and I son;t think MS wants to associate themselves with gutter folk.

And then you should try to explain our beloved nation is NOT called Holland. Fun guaranteed ;) .

Blackcomb is a ski resort, how is that not a 'vista'?

Furthermore, why do code names need to fit in with marketing names? It's not like they'll be selling the Vienna name.

Good to see Microsoft proactively renaming their vaporware. I remember back in early 2003, Microsoft sent an email to our company soliciting feature requests for the Blackcomb, which was to ship after Longhorn, since Longhorn was coming out later that year.

I said a "No to all" button would be nice (in addition to "Yes", "Yes to All" and "No")

Maybe in 2013 when Vienna ships they'll finally have implemented it.

...forgive me for being a cynical person, but who cares about a codename? What we care about is a product. Vista isn't even here and we are already talking about what hypothetical features a non-existent successor to vista will have. The codename should be the LAST thing on people's minds. I don't care if they call it "Little bears like honey but are afraid of bees" - what is important is to get the current working models out the door, and then get working on future projects - you do that and then you CHANGE something's name

The product after the heavily delayed product I've yet to released has been given a new codename.

Kind of like giving thought to what you'll use as an ad hoc name for your second child while your better half is still carrying the first...

That's a good point. The media reports on something Microsoft says, even casually and not as a press release, and some people accuse Microsoft of just trying to put out PR to keep themselves in the news (though I'm glad to not see any of that here, yet).

Eh, no. The next version of Windows after Vista is Longhorn Server (still a code name at this point).

And... ehhh... so it changed to Vienna. Slow news day, eh? I submitted a news item (never posted - http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/380) about the OpenBSD dev's refusal to fix root weaknesses in securelevels, and we're sitting here talking about code names.
