Where are the Suse 10 rpms?

Does anyone know of Suse 10 binary packages for Ekiga?

I'd like to try this out, but I can't install any compilers on this box.

Ekiga looks very, very promising. Along with Gizmoproject and Openwengo, they are helping make SIP into the widely used open standard that it deserves to be.

Get off skype and get on the interoperability train. Otherwise, do you want a repeat of the current IM situation with people having to keep separate Yahoo, AOL, MSN accounts to be able to talk to each other?

SIP is the name of the game. And if you are tired of software problems, just get yourself a Linksys PAP2, a CISCO SIP phone, a SIPURA or any of the hundreds of pieces of hardware that support SIP (sipphone.com)

A long sought after feature that, AFAIK, is yet unimplemented is the desktop/windows sharing ability of NetMeeting. Obviously there's other solutions, but it ought to be there for completeness sake (I personally don't have the time or talent to implement that particular feature myself, otherwise I would).

Not sure if I would want to let someone take control of my PC through a telephony app. Other solutions (like using net meeting itslef) seem safer.

I agree, I don't know why a telephony app should have a remote desktop feature - I don't see how that fits together. On my Ubuntu desktop, I have Ekiga, and I have a VNC client & server installed as default to do this.

Didn't you know that every serious Gnome application needs a strange name no one understands? Fits nicely with Totem, Epiphany, Serpentine, etc. ;)

I tried configuring ekiga with the details from my voip provider, and it worked at first try! The only problem I've seen is an inability to talk to another voip using which uses draytek vigor voip routers, due to an iability to negotiate a common codec. I assume this is because ekiga doesn't come with patentet codecs.

Skype still has its place

Nice thing about Skype is that it "just works". Run the installer and go. No messing around with your firewall or anything unless you've got outbound filters. Bad thing about Skype is no video in Linux.

Having said that, I'm glad someone's at least attempting to create some sort of open alternative.

I might give it a try again when there's a Windows version and it works seamlessly through NAT. I do run Linux, but nobody that I want to call does.

Gizmoproject and openwengo run on windows, mac and linux and they use SIP.

And as I said, if you move to hardware solutions, which most non-geeks much prefer, you will have the whole world to talk to.

You don't have to mess about with your firewall to use SIP under Ekiga, either. The initital configuration process has a button which says "Detect NAT Type". You click it. It detects your NAT type, then determines what mode it should use to traverse the NAT, you click 'OK', and you're done. You only have to change firewall / router settings to use H323 (the old protocol Netmeeting used).

This has to be the worst name change in history. Going from a intuitive name that tells you something about what the software to something completely random (atleast to the public).

Everyone who complains about the names of KThisApp KThatApp in every kde related news posting should have a look at this name change and ask them selves if this change really was for the better.

If you already have a gizmo account, ekiga is fully compatible with it. In your ekiga account setup, put the following info

Account Name: gizmo
Registrar: proxy01.sipphone.com:5060
User: 17476252230 (This is your SIP number)
Password: **********
Authentication Login: 17476252230
Realm/Domain: proxy01.sipphone.com
Registration Timeout: 3600

Good luck and happy calling...

Finally a free software implentation of SIP that doesn't suck!
