Exactly five years ago, 24th March 2001, Apple officially launched its new operating system, Mac OS X, the highly anticipated (and highly needed) successor to Mac OS 9. From the official press release: "Apple today announced that beginning this Saturday, March 24, customers can buy Mac OS X in retail stores around the world. Mac OS X is the world's most advanced operating system, combining the power and openness of UNIX with the legendary ease of use and broad applications base of Macintosh."

I for one enjoyed MacOS 9!
I think that MacOS X 10.0, and 10.1 were awful!
I bought 10.0 and tried 10,1- never used them...
10.2 was a turning point which 10.2 sort of started being better than OS9
The technologies proposed for copland were pretty cool, openDOC was nice, and things that died were good - too bad - but lets not pretend that 10.0 was the best thing since sliced bread!

Heh. Last night as part of troubleshooting a CMS I have to use I had to swap the OS9 drive back into my PowerMac.
Aieee ... the horror, the horror. Opera 6. IE 5.1
(Compounded by the fact that my 2 button logitec scroll wheel mouse didn't work properly.)

Eh, I always liked X better than 9, but 10.2 was the point where it really started to be as polished as 9 was.

I liked that GUI, along with the original MacOS X 1.0 Server, which was released before the client 10.0 version. Then again, for people such as you and I, we're technical and don't get wrapped up in whether the GUI looks sexy, but the fact is, Apple's focus is on the mainstream computer use who squirts with excitement when they see something pretty and shiney.

Mac OS X is a breath of fresh air compared to anything else out there.
However, I'm not too pleased with it's security over these last several years. A lot of the exploits seems to come because Apple didn't sit down and figure out "how can this feature be used maliciously?"
Here we were priding ourselves on Mac OS X's compartmentalized security and a simple URL Handler or Meta file exploit roots our machines.
I personally will not buy another Apple product until there is a proven track record of security again. I got away from Windows because of the headaches, I'm not repeating that again. If it don't work, I don't buy it.
By the way, here is a video of Steve Jobs demoing the NeXT operating system, it's nice to see what's made it to Mac OS X and see what's been left out.

Actually it does not crash too much (I did it crash once, in a G4 of my ex girlfriend who is an illustrator, when trying to install "PSy" and VideoLan-VCL, also some Fink ports... We started quarreling for anything after that... We broke up 2 months later ... LOL.), and its is the nicest out there, but a bit slow in my view...

They know "nothing" about computers, neither they have interest in knowing about them.... They just use it cause is cute and helps them to make their pretty design and stuff...
Macs and women get along well, though... both are well designed, intend to be cute, and are meant not to be touched more than necessary... Besides they protect each other ...!!!!!

...and then, of course, OS X 10.0 when it was released. I used it, but would switch between that PC and another running BeOS of all things. When 10.1 came out, it got better, faster, then 10.2. It's been my more-or-less fulltime OS for a couple of years now. I often wish OPENSTEP continued on in parallel. It was "purer" in a sense.
But you cannot knock the fantastic graphics of this OS, it really is stunning in person. Screenshots don't do it justice. But they have mucked with the look at every release, which bugs me somewhat. I was actually very happy with 10.1/10.2. The latest versions... I dunno. Not sure what they have been thinking with the brushed finder and the unified title bar and toolbar. I actually kind of like the unified look, but I still don't like the brushed metal stuff.
Stability-wise... I am super pleased. Application availability... Eh. Some things (development tools) could be better. I AM happy with all the freeware and shareware tools that are available. There are a lot more than I ever expected 5 years ago! And they are of pretty good quality, too.

I preffered 8.6 to 9 as in my experience it was far more stable. It seemed to me 9 was a necessary evil to make the transition to X easier.
10.0 was pretty bad but you could see the potential. also, I remember I was stunned by the speed at which shareware and freeware apps were being written for os 10.0. Every release has gone from strength to strength.
I really do miss two features though from the pre Os X days. 1 - the way windows automaticly turned into tabs when dragged them to the bottom of the screen. 2 - the ability to have icons act as buttons.
