Intel "Intel invented the first microprocessor, the 4-bit 4004, in 1971. Since then the company has gone on to become a corporate powerhouse, growing almost as fast as the transistor count in their CPUs. However, the company has posted some disappointing earnings results recently, including a 38 percent drop in profit for the first quarter of 2006, and has been losing marketshare and mindshare to its rival AMD, especially in the high-end, 64-bit computing arena. Otellini thinks the best cure for the company's blues is an old fashioned corporate restructuring. The CEO announced the plan at an analyst conference today in New York City."

Big companies barely change

Just like Microsoft admiting that there are internal problems with their daily operations, Intel is simply so big that change is difficult to say the least.

AMD is a smaller, more innovative, and efficient company that can change direction far more easily than Intel. The 'yamhill' project (now EM64T) was a clear sign that the Itanic was sinking fast in the 64-bit world. When you've got lots of management people, things just get way too bureaucratic and political. All the bosses usually surround themselves with 'yes men' and aren't open to suggestions from the crowd. AMD is gaining major attention world-wide, and the Opterons and dual-core Athlons are butt-kickin' in terms of price, power consumption, and performance. Watt-for-watt, AMD simply produces better products than Intel, but because of Intel's juggernat-like size, they will remain a formidable force for a long time.

I think AMD should help out these soon-to-be unemployed Intel employees and engineers by hiring them. Intel may be letting go of some significantly valuable people.

in favour of Intel duo cores for my next laptop. It will wipe the walls with my AMD 64. AMD is NOT good for laptops they are only good on the 19" rack with opterons and for workstations. If you want silence (bliss), dual cores on the go, then Intel is the way to go. Merom kicks AMDs ass with their power saving. This is going to be my first intel purchase in a decade, I was blinded by AMD's spouting on their power features. THeyre full of shit in that area, Intel is goign to wipre AMD with power saving and multiple cores outside of the server room.

Yeah but for how long? You really think given that AMD is wiping the floor with Intel's ass with their desktop/workstation processors, that the same is not going to happen in the notebook segment as well? And have you seen Conroe's numbers? They are not as optimistic as Intel would have you believe. Do a little bit of searching on Google and you will see what I mean.

When AMD have better power savings I will go back, for NOW Intel is where its at in the notebook market, why do you think Apple use them.

When AMD improves I will go back but my next laptop is a Inte Merom Duo. I made the mistake of buying an AMD 64 on this Ferrari, its a windtunnel that melts like a cheeseburger.

Yeah, I to think Meron and Cer... errr. whatever, will own whatever AMD got out at that moment, but I'm quite confident that AMD won't just sit there either, and they have talented people in house.

AMD has beaten Intel in price, performance, dual core design, 64 bit and in the later time also desktop cpu power consumption.

The Yonah is good but it's still only 32-bit, Meron will fix that and get even less power consumtion, putting Meron on top for a short while, but nothing says AMD can't beat Intel in their own game again.

38 percent drop in earnings, can't dare decrease the profit margin so you start laying off employees... Sounds like the auto industry at that point.

... and of course, this restructuring causes a stock jump, as lower employee count means lower expendatures and steeper profit margins... Of course once these cuts in employees catches up to the assembly line, we'll see a major crash in value and share by end of year... ah, the joys of investing and watching people gut their own company for pocket cash.
