As promised, Nokia announces today the 2006 OS update for the 770 Internet Tablet adding Google Talk, a full screen finger keyboard, improved memory performance, and new refreshed look. Additional applets have also been added for faster access to internet services.

The 770 just keeps on getting better, I'm not regretting investing in one at all. The huge range of software available for it and the openess of the whole system makes it a clear Palm/PocketPC/Symbian beater for me. I didn't know it had a microphone though...

it all depends on what devices you try it with i think.
basicly its linux at the core, so im guessing that its using the linux bluetooth driver. but if the device at the other end is troublesome (i have found that nokia phones can behave strangely when it comes to bluetooth) there is nothing you can do.
still, i much prefer bluetooth over having to trow away a whole device each time there is a updated phone system in place. but its a matter of preference. i dont recall what devices she tested it with right now...

did some digging and it looks like atleast the original 770 firmware came with the device in a permanent state of non-discovery and non-connectivity.
ie, if the 770 didnt initiate the bluetooth connection, the phone may not even know its there. there was allso some strangeness around file transfers. but then that does not surprise me. while my rather aged T610 shows all files i have on it over bluetooth, allways, my sisters samsung have the ability to have each file tagged as downloadable or not. and it defaults to not on new pictures and stuff like that.
basicly it seems there is enough wiggle-space in how the bluetooth protocol can be managed that pairing can be hit and miss, at best.
would be interesting if eugenia would do a new review of the 770 with the latest firmware, to see if some of the original problems got cleared up.

The 770 uses a TI OMAP processor like many smartphones do. This has an ARM9 core and . There are newer OMAP processors with faster ARM11 cores at higher clock rates and 2D/3D accelerated GPUs based on the same PowerVR MBX core used in Kyro Graphics Cards and the Dreamcast. These also have DSPs cores intergrated to rmove the need for a seperate baseband processor in a smartphone.

This may sound like a small thing for every hacker out there, but it also seems like the new release will bring along official support for virtual mem, which is a pretty nice thing to have on such a low mem device.

having a useful expansion slot would also be nice.

but i would prefer a GoForce 5500 chip, maybe thats just me, but Q3 at 800x480 sounds like a ball, especially with hi-def sound.

this thing is awesome. oready for wifi out of tthe box. easy to set uup and the screen rrealestate is perfect for surfing!
my first grip though is the version of flash, it comes with flash 6 and the rss news app is a bit slow.

I'm pretty sure the hardware can support it, but it would be a lot of work. Nokia's done some really nice integration stuff with the maemo API and the (extremely) limited set of buttons the 770 has, so KDE would have to be modified to support that. Qt does have an embedded version that can run directly on a framebuffer, and Linux can support the OMAP video in fb mode, so a properly motivated person might be able to port KDE to the 770. I don't think anyone's working on it though.
