Totally agreed, I think that Syllable is the most promising of the truly alternative OSes. It's quite admirable that the Syllable developers seem to have a commitment taking the time to build their OS "correctly," rather than the "bubblegum-and-bailing-twine" approach that so many other OSes seem to take.
Any chance 0.6.2 is coming out soon?
I think something's up with nVidia Geforce 4 MX440 support, or the box I'm trying Syllable on. Both of 0.6.1 basic and live cds boot all the way to where the app_server takes over, and beyond, but the screen turns all black after bootup. My CRT would complain if it was driven beyond its capabilities, so it must be a software error of some kind.
I have the same problem with GeForce FX 6200.
Follow this thread, use the special kernel, and perhaps the bug(s) will be quenched:

My monitor doesn't get completely blank - just very dark. But I can read the text when looking from a instance of 1".
Until then, pass disable_pci=true to the kernel:
kernel /path/to/kernel disable_pci=true
GeForce2 MX400 works however (Syllable 0.6.0a)
Disabling pci in GRUB let me boot to login once, but on subsequent boots it won't go past showing a black screen and the mouse pointer. (at least something!)
I think I'll wait for 0.6.2 and try to find a PS/2 mouse. On the one boot that worked I learned that the login screen doesn't let you Tab around.
