Syllable, AtheOS After Arno Klenke already ported GCC 4.0 to the Syllable desktop operating system some time ago, the Syllable team has now integrated the port and updated it to version 4.1.1. Many other ports, like BinUtils, are also being updated to the latest versions. Work is now underway to update Syllable itself to compile it with GCC 4. Please note that if you compile programs with GCC 4.1.1, any users of your binary will need to have GCC 4.1.1 installed as well - or wait for Syllable 0.6.2.

Oh, I've been waiting for that. And as usual it came much sooner than I had expected.

Syllable has taken som great strides the last 12 months. Especially the last couple of releases have been hot.

Totally agreed, I think that Syllable is the most promising of the truly alternative OSes. It's quite admirable that the Syllable developers seem to have a commitment taking the time to build their OS "correctly," rather than the "bubblegum-and-bailing-twine" approach that so many other OSes seem to take.

0.6.2, GeForce

Any chance 0.6.2 is coming out soon?

I think something's up with nVidia Geforce 4 MX440 support, or the box I'm trying Syllable on. Both of 0.6.1 basic and live cds boot all the way to where the app_server takes over, and beyond, but the screen turns all black after bootup. My CRT would complain if it was driven beyond its capabilities, so it must be a software error of some kind.

I have the same problem with GeForce FX 6200.

Follow this thread, use the special kernel, and perhaps the bug(s) will be quenched:

My monitor doesn't get completely blank - just very dark. But I can read the text when looking from a instance of 1".

Until then, pass disable_pci=true to the kernel:

kernel /path/to/kernel disable_pci=true

GeForce2 MX400 works however (Syllable 0.6.0a)

Disabling pci in GRUB let me boot to login once, but on subsequent boots it won't go past showing a black screen and the mouse pointer. (at least something!)

I think I'll wait for 0.6.2 and try to find a PS/2 mouse. On the one boot that worked I learned that the login screen doesn't let you Tab around.

Really Cool News

That's really cool news. It's definitely not just a recompile going from gcc 3.x to gcc 4, especially gcc 4.1.

In short, great work Syllable Devs. This is a testament to awesome code. ;)
