eWEEK Labs got a hold of Vista Build 5472 on July 18, loaded it up on a test machine and took a quick tour. eWEEK Labs' tests show a smooth upgrade from Windows XP and helpful new utilities, but the overhauled Windows Explorer still needs work.

I have not been very impressed with the screenshots of the new UI. The cheap transparency thrills they added looks like it will get old faster than brushed metal on OSX. Everyone will play with it for the first few days… but when they want to start getting work done they will probably want to turn it off so that they can actually read the window headings. Glitz is cool... right up to the point where it gets in your way.

The 10,000-ft perspective I've gleened from the last 2 months of Vista beta news is that Vista will be far from a slam dunk, but at least the world won't come to a screeching halt. There's enough positive news coming out of the media and gradual progress coming out of Redmond that while I still feel sorry for the unfortunate fate of Windows users, I'm no longer concerned that Vista will be so bad that it will have a large negative impact on Mac and Linux users like myself.
Some people have suggested that Vista will be a referendum on proprietary software development, the death knoll of a dying model. I sure hope it isn't that bad, because that wouldn't be good news for anybody.

None of Microsoft's operating systems are a slam-dunk; they don't have to be. They just have to work well, support the user base ... and get pre-installed.
I certainly hope that Vista is not the end of the line, because I'ver tried the alternatives, and for me at least, they don't cut the mustard.

Why is the Linux desktop dead? It surely can't be because of an OS not availablt till at least 2007.
The reality is every build gets posted. I can ony see good things for Vista for releasing test versions often, but these in these articles the enphasis is not what has changed, improved over the last build, but another this is what the beta is. I'd be happy with a *changelog*, at least I can make a sensible comment.

I have yet to try this latest build, but from what I can gather so far is that Vista will be a significant move forward, although not as far of a leap as there was from 3.11 to 95.
One comment I do have to make regarding the glass interface. I find a lot of the buzz strange about XGL and the Glass interface as been so freaking revolutionary. I say this because currently my Nvidia card is doing a lot of the same tricks that XGL does. Although neat to see, I have yet to fully comprehend I guess how these are so revolutionary. Especially XGL which I found to not only be a pain in the ass to get working, but once it is it is rather annoying to say the least. While at the same time not really offering anything substantial. I would hope that devlopers see that the next step should move away from cheap eye candy to something much more useful.
I agree with Debaser, these are interesting the first day or so, but afterwards it is best just turning them off
