OpenSSH Server Ported to Windows CE

PDAs, Cellphones, Wireless The OpenSSH server has been ported to Windows CE, enabling secure remote access to a Windows CE device using the SSH protocol. The software is currently released at version 0.0.1, under a BSD-style license, and is available in binary and source form.

awesome. I'm going to laod this up on my jornada 720 (assuming itll work) and play with it. Dunno how useful itll be ;)

Unfortunately it won't work (or at least not right away). It is compiled for WinCE 5.0 and depends on lots of libraries missing from J720 (which is WinCE 3.0).

Although there are tricks to make some applications written for newer systems working on good old Jornadas, but I doubt it'll work this time.

What can you do on the shell in WinCE? I've got a Jornada 720 also, and I use CE to chainload Linux these days (just as I thought you'd be doing by now helf ;) )... I noticed it does have a command prompt, but I didn't find much it could do.

you can do AWESOME, advanced stuff like 'del', and 'dir', and telnet out. and if you install extra apps, you can ssh and ftp and such. basically nothing. ;)

I was going to load up netbsd on my 720 but i gave it to my dad the other day. i wasn't using it.

What this would really be useful for would be embedded devices such as a router or other device without a "normal" user interface running Windows CE, not neccesarily a PDA or phone.

Not really usefull for shell access as windows commandline application are non-existent or don't cooperate with one another. But it would still be usefull for sftp, tunnelling, remote command execution.... etc.

Who actually wants to SSH into their phone? Maybe as a non-smartphone owner I'm missing the point, but I'd have thought most people tended to have their phone about their person if they were likely to need it...

I don't think the primary application will be for phones, because as you pointed out, it's a bit useless. Windows CE is Microsoft's all purpose embedded OS, that just happens to be used as a base for Windows Mobile. It'll probablly be usefull on devices that do not have a user accessible user interface.

So, since this is an port to an MS OS, does this mean that the software comes with all default account info. I suppose that could be fun to SSH into people's smartphones and start taskkilling ;)
