Hardware, Embedded Systems PCMag reviews the HP TouchSmart IQ770, an all-in-one computer with a touchscreen display, and conlcudes: "Is the HP TouchSmart IQ770 an iMac killer? In a word: maybe. In its current incarnation the IQ770 certainly outclasses the current Windows-based Editors' Choice the Sony Vaio VGC-LS1. I am going to hold my final judgement on the IQ770 until we put it up against other Vista-based PCs, but so far I like what I see."

as all of the other "all-in-ones"...

Computer parts don't all have the same lifespan. Things wear out, other things need upgraded to expand the life of the machine. These make it very hard to keep up on the latest and greatest.

After 2 or 3 years, I usually upgrade my computer (RAM, GPU, the latest optical drive, etc...) then I get another 2 or 3 years out of it. With these all-in-ones, you need to replace it after a couple of years and pass it on to the kids.

Although I might not be the intended audience...I usually have a couple of towers on (and under) my desk...

The nice thing about Apple machines, though, is that they hold their value quite well. So instead of upgrading bits at a time*, use it for two years, get a substantial portion of your purchase price back on EBay, and buy a new one. It probably comes out to a little bit more, but given that these days its seems you have to upgrade your CPU/GPU/RAM/Motherboard/PSU all at the same time, because the interfaces keep changing, it probably won't be much more.

People plunk down $1500 on the iMac just because how sexy it is. This thing looks like it could toast my Eggos for breakfast.

If I had $1800, I'd get a 20" iMac and an EyeTV hybrid. For the same price as this HP, you'd get a bigger and better* screen, a processor that was twice as fast, at the cost of about 70GB of disk space.

*) The LCD in the 20" iMac is the venerable LG 20" S-IPS panel found in the 20" Cinema Display and Dell 2005FPW/2007WFP. There are no 19" widescreen S-IPS panels that I'm aware of.

Surely, what you get with the HP is the touch screen? Otherwise you're right, by comparison in terms of performance its a bit of a dog. But it will be interesting to see whether they are right and touch screens really are a hot selling point.

In terms of looks, I seem to be the only one here who actually finds it, from the pics, better looking than the iMacs. It looks like a nice, serious piece of industrial design, whereas that white plastic on the iMacs has always seemed a bit tacky. This is totally down to taste. But the touch screen is a unique factor.
