OSNews, Generic OSes FreeVMS is an OpenVMS-like operating system; it consists of a POSIX kernel and a DCL command line interpreter. The only architectures currently supported are i386 and x86-64. Version 0.3.2 has just been released and you can grab it from the ftp server. It is probably wise to read the USE file before diving into FreeVMS. News: support for DCL open/read/close, and all open/read/write/close with VMS-style logicals, some I/O counts, DCL show status, and a better-looking show system.

It's a shame this didn't come out in 1990. I was working on VAXes then and would have really appreciated it.

I miss OS-native versioning.

VMS jockey from the late 1980s here. VMS was a geek badge of its very own.

I wonder if it runs in virtual pc or vmware. I've always wanted to tool around in vms and didn't really want to buy an openvms cd.

Have you tried http://deathrow.vistech.net
They offer free VMS shell accounts with full DCL access and mail, etc.
