Amiga & AROS The facelift the AROS project had planned is now complete. Most importantly, due to the recent legal troubles concerning Amiga, the project has changed its name from "Amiga Research Operating System" into "AROS Research Operating System". They have also redone their website. There is also development news; the USB UHCI and OHCI support has been completed, and write support for the FAT filesystem has been added, among other things.

I still don't plan on using AROS, due to technical faults in the system that haven't been addressed yet. (Taking out the name Amiga from the name of AROS is a step towards accuracy.)

But as long as Eric Schwartz is still creating their mascot, then all is right in the world.

Would it not help to point out those 'technical faults' so that even if you're not going to file bugs, other astute readers may?

I'm going to take a guess that the lack of memory protection is one of them. Maybe it's the crappy (by modern standards) API (BOOPSI is pretty ugly after all). I don't know if I'd consider those "bugs" just design problems.

As an aside, I really hate recursive acronyms.

Convincing the admins here on OSNews that AROS really is NOT Amiga news and should have its own cat-mascot icon instead of the boing-ball.

Hmm, not quite.

I don't see the problem anyway - there's no point in making up something beginning with 'A' when everyone knows it as AROS already. It's not like GNU people are bothered by it.

OMG, so the acronym will be AROSROS? xP

I don't know if AROS will be ever "mature", but it's fun to play with ;)

I've used this OS system on my PC computer, but I hate having to boot straight from the CD disk.
That reminds me, tonight I have to look up my PIN number and head down to the nearest ATM machine.

Other recursive acronyms:

Gnu - Gnu's not Unix
Pine - Pine is not Elm
Wine - Wine Is Not an Emulator
PHP - PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor

That should get you started,
