OpenSUSE 10.3 Beta 1 Released

OpenSUSE 10.3 beta 1 has been released. "The openSUSE team is proud to announce the first Beta release of openSUSE 10.3. There are many exciting enhancements and features in the new release. Among these are a whole new and greatly improved package management stack (libzypp), significantly faster boot time, parts of KDE 4, a 1-CD KDE Install and a 1-CD GNOME install, beautiful green artwork, a new One-Click Install technology that integrates with the openSUSE Build Service and much more."

wow, that was quick, was just like 2 days ago that the alpha version 7 was released.

cant wait for the final release on this and they've finally got rid of the mono based updater.

yeah, they're always pretty quick with beta's and alpha's....

And every piece of mono they can kill off is a great advantage to the Linux/Suse users, so yeah, that's good news.

Mono based updater

I have to say when they added that mess, updating and upgrading went to heck. I missed the ease of using the yast tools alone; I hope the new setup brings back the days I enjoyed doing updates (Yeah, I enjoyed it!) and makes them as easy as it was for 9.3. That was pretty sweet!

Now if it works out the box with my Olympus digital voice recorder, it'll be beyond sweet...I'll be in heaven... :-)

they get three things right

1) the big startmenu bug
2) the system update
3) speed up the whole system

Installer

OpenSUSE and SLED needs a brand new installer. The current one is just weird and clunky.

It's even worst in the SLED case since they moved from KDE to Gnome. The current QT-based installer doesn't integrate very well.

I know I'm picky ;-)

well, it's not only the installer but also the configuration tools. It's weird anyway, as Gnome has seperate tools, while Yast integrates it all in one convenient location (and even integrates with the KDE control center).

Yes, I really like YAST and the way KDE integrates...
I just wish getting things like ATI cards and stuff to work would get easier...

As for the MS stooge comments:

I am glad the flamers haven't shown up as well...

For the record, I don't like Microsoft's products or business strategies/government payoffs or the fact that Novell is reinforcing the FUD regarding users and enterprise customers. But, to see OpenSuse getting back to where they came from before Novell and diverging a bit from the Enterprise versionswhile using the resources of a "clueless" company is pretty sweet...long live Novell!!! May their pockets never empty and may KDE rule as the one true Ring, er SuSe distribution for weekend geeks like myself!!

I'm not complaining, but where are all the "Novell is evil" / "Microsoft stooge" posts?

That said, maybe I shouldn't ask. It's nice to have a break from them.

I am downloading the KDE single cd. Personally, I am very fond of only having a single CD with minimal installation and easy add-ons via the net. That's one of the reason I like Ubuntu so much.

openSuse 10.3 does look exciting though.

Just did it and installed it! Awesome...I need to get the development tools and Scrbus myself, and had trouble with the AddOn CD, but it looks great... Now to get my new themes from KDE Look and I am off...

Oh, by the way, recognized my Olympus WS100 digital voice recorder right off the bat. Guess I gotta go get Audacity now and get to wrok. Pretty sweet folks...give it a try...will try the Broadcom Wireless and let you all know soon...

No such luck for me. It installed fine, but X just refuses to start. Spent some time trying to sort it out, but finally gave up. I'll be looking forward to the next beta or the final release.
