Hardware, Embedded Systems I guess the cat is out of the bag. "Everex has confirmed plans to ship a UMPC with a 7-inch screen, similar to competitor Asus's EEE PC. A source close to the company revealed that the device - codenamed 'Cloudbook' - will ship with the Google Apps-oriented 'gOS' Linux distribution early next year."

If it competes on price with the EEE, then I want one! It's so much more attractive than Asus' offering!

It's great to see such competition in the Linux world. I'm excited that there is a lot more out there to offer for hardware now. I think the Cloudbook looks like a great deal.

It just looks so damn cheesy. But we shall see. Seems more promising than the Eee, which already is promising. Neato!

Here is a video review I found of the device being sold as a packard bell with XP on it

Looks interesting but the worst mouse input ever made

One of the most attractive things about the EEE is the flash storage. I don't care if it's less space; silent, rugged, energy-efficient solid state is what I want for a small laptop. It's not my desktop replacement, and if it were, I suppose I could just hook up an external USB hard drive.

I love the eee pc (I have a 701 4G without webcam), but a cloudbook could make a nice portable server with the 2.5" drive..!

The problem is that the Eee's battery life isn't all that spectacular in the first place. The Via chip will probably be more efficient than the Celeron, and thus offset the HD battery usage. Perhaps even surpass the Eee.

Exactly - simply slap a 32 GB USB stick onto that baby. Having said that, I will wait for the promised 10" EEE - I know I would feel stoopid having bought the 7" when the 10" hits the shelves.

Yeah, it seems Linux is skipping that stage. ;-)

TYOTLL, but 7", please add a few pixels O hardware people, I can't really have fun with something even below 800x600.

You said it. I would gladly pay a little more for a 9-10 inch screen that was higher in resolution. I dont want to have to squint at it, but I would like to be able to fit a decent amount on the screen at once. At least the EEE (and presumably this one) will push 16X12 out of the video out port. Hook that puppy up to a big ass monitor and a keyboard and your all set.

Awesome.

The real kicker will be the battery life. This looks like a nice competitor to the EeePC (which I love). Maybe the C7 will give them better battery life, which would be nice (although the hard drive probably negates that). 2008 is going to see quite a bit more competition in this space I think.

In any case it's awesome that there is a market opening up where Windows is really not a viable option. Who wants to pay an extra $50 for an OS on a device costing less than $400?

Amazing,

Simply amazing. But I want more: more manufactures will mean more features for less money ;) Anyway, if this little thing can compete with the eeePC price-wise (and can satisfy the initial demand), I'll be picking up as soon as it's available.

A brilliant year for FOSS: hopefully this will bring more attention and hardware manufacturers will improve hardware support.

Hopefully we will see a rush of these devices from different manufacturers. That will help to provide models with better specs and also help keep prices low.

Good for the consumer, good for linux.

I can't wait...

I wonder how many users will wipe out gOS and install windows xp

another alternative is to turn the cloudbook into a thin client and run windows apps off thinserver xp
