I already updated my Palm.. wait.. no.. that's an n810 running Linux.. sorry, never mind..
seriously though, I've been waiting since the T5 was brand new.. watched Palm make one bad decision after another.. split the company.. regroup the company.. sell the software off to Access.. and on.. and on.. Eventually it came down to the consumer device that could be considered a true upgrade from the T5 but Palm didn't provide that device before the competition did.
I do have to give credit to Access though. The PalmOS emulator is a staple of my Maemo installs. If the new OS is coming out of there developers, it could be what the remaining Palm faithful deserve.
Actually, I'd put money on it that there will be devices shipping with the new Palm OS next year. Unlike the situation Palm had when they released Palm OS 6 (aka Cobalt), Palm are not worrying about getting other device manufacturers to license the product. This OS has been built by Palm, for Palm, as their last chance at differentiating themselves and having a truly compelling platform.
There is simply too much at stake, and Palm cannot afford to not release Nova. Whether or not it provides a good alternative to the iPhone and Android remains to be seen. I hope it does well.
...there were a free update for all of us with older PalmOS gear who have stuck with them over all this time.
I have an old Palm Zire 72s I still use and just picked up a new hardcase for; the old one literally fell apart over the last six months after three or four years of hard use. I like it despite its flaws because even with those flaws it still works better than its competition does. I started with An HP iPaq 1915 and have a Dell Axim x5 I neglect in favor of the Palm Zire 72s...
I still like the idea and the concept of PDAs and PocketPCs, unfortunately these types of devices have failed completely to live up to their potential and I think once my Zire dies I will be done with thos things for good in favor of my Eee 901, and hopefully its lighter and more portable(!) successors.
