Google "Google has released an experimental browser plugin that will make it possible to display rich 3D graphics in Web content. Google hopes that the plugin will stimulate discussion within the Web development community and contribute to a nascent effort headed by the Khronos group to bring 3D graphics to the Web. The plugin provides an implementation of O3D, a new API conceived by Google that facilitates the development of interactive 3D Web applications. It can be used to programmatically create and manipulate 3D graphics with the JavaScript programming language. The source code of the plugin is distributed under the open source BSD license, which broadly permits third-party developers to study, modify, and redistribute the plugin software."

I doubt people would appreciate 3D pr0n. I think they would prefer HD pr0n movies.

Anyway, what about analysing why VRML failed in the first place in order for O3D not to be yet another 3D fiasco?

But wait for the person that combines 3D and HD pr0n, and that person will soon rule the world (or at least be 100x richer than the richest). You can almost hear the salivating from all the 17 year old teens and 50 year old married men.

I doubt people will want to see HD porn; the reason why people like porn is because it is so fake and unrealistic; the moment you use HD all the flaws of the actors come through and the fantasy is pretty much destroyed.

As for the amount of bandwidth it would use up (given NZ is on metered internet) you might as well get a prostitute or a rentboy for the evening (which is legal here) - or just go out to a bar and do the old fashion past time of turning on the charm.

I really wish they do good things before Flash format bring 3d functionalities

Open manipulation with JavaScript and rapid browser engines could bring something good

Reinventing the wheel?

First, there was Virtual Reality Modeling Language:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vrml
Then X3D:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X3D

Are they starting from scratch with O3D, or are they learning lessons from the failed attempts of the past?

I really liked VRML back in the day.
Sure, it wasn't without it's problems, but considering how pioneering it was, it wasn't all that bad

I really was wondering when they'd get around to this. It remains to be seen whether they get something working and distributed however.

Strategically this is quite interesting, and looks like a move for Google to pre-empt alternatives such as Flash and especially Silverlight for such things. Video is perhaps the most obvious first use though for a next generation plugin and standard before 3D however. Afterall, Google run the site on the internet that can virtually guarantee such a format as a de facto standard - YouTube.

It is meant to extend their V8 prowess with 3D capability. They should have included an audio API for good measure.

Now you can write 3D games in JavaScript for real!
