Apple "The new versions, 3.1 for the iPhone and 3.1.1 for the iPod touch, are fairly minor upgrades which on the surface seem to add compatibility features with the newly introduced iTunes 9. While the iPhone software update is free, iPod Touch users will once again be forced to ante up if they want to upgrade."

My upgrade from Ipod Touch OS 3.0 to 3.1.1 was free, as expected. Perhaps you mean going from 2.xx to 3.xx still costs? Or perhaps my upgrade was free because I bought 3.0 in mid-August?

I bought my 3.0 upgrade right when it came out and 3.1 was free for me as well.

I upgraded my Touch a few times since version 1 (making it quite expensive), but this time the upgrade was free.

Many sites and users are saying that have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.1, however mine states it's on 3.1 and itunes states that 3.1 is the latest.

Is this different for any internation iphone users, im based in the UK.

Thanks

The iPhone and iPod touch have different version numbers. The iPhone is now at 3.1 and the Touch at 3.1.1.

"The iPhone 3.1 software for iPod touch is included with all iPod touch models purchased after September 9, 2009."

Else, it costs: "Download the Software Update. Only $4.95."

Actually your source just says what the price is for the 3.1 for those who have to pay at all. It doesn't say who gets it for free (although I can understand how it looks implied from the sentence about 9:th of September, but that is actually information about on which devices it comes pre-installed). I admit that they could be clearer on their site, but they where very clear at the product launch yesterday in pointing out that 3.0 -> 3.1 is free of charge both for iPhone and iPod touch.

Cheers,
Emil

I updated both my iPhone 3G and iPod touch 1st gen for free. Both were at version 3.x.

WiFi less draining

After updating my iPod touch to iPhone OS 3.0, I noticed a significant battery drain while leaving WiFi on, even when it wasn't engaged with a network.

Since version 3.1, I've noticed that things are improved. I haven't done any formal testing, but my iPod touch was previously discharged within a day though it seems at about 70 % battery charge after 2 days. I've yet to enable Bluetooth again to see how that affects the drain but it seemed that the modified WiFi polling had made the most impact.

I like ipods, I believe that they are more durable because of the ipod's inner electronics but i think of buyers like us there should be provision of compatibility. For an example http://www.bbctechnologies.biz">nokia should be compatible with ipods and other such systems.
