Games There are some things in this world that just happen. There's really no logical reason for it to happen, there's no explanation as to why it happens now, and not, say, three years ago. Minecraft is one those things. It's a game, but not entirely. It's digital Lego, but not entirely. It's impossible to explain what it is in words alone - you need to experience it. All I have to point to is this: someone has created a working 16bit ALU inside Minecraft. Which is a videogame. An ALU running inside a videogame running on a processor which has an ALU. In blocks. Wait, what?

Argh. They call it Minecrack for a reason. So cripplingly addicted to this. I’ve spent about 40 hours building my world and there’s just so many beautiful views. For a game randomly generated, it nails all the aesthetics.

Obligatory screenshot: http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/4061/screenshot20100926at000.png That’s a staircase with waterfalls for windows ;)

The fact someone made a working logic circuit, doesn’t surprise me, if it’s possible—no matter how laborious—it will be done. (Someone made a working 8-bit circuit in Little Big Planet). It’ll be a brainf* interpreter next ;)

"you listening, pig?"

Some enterprising (read - genius ) Dwarf Fortress users have done similar work.

Old Version of the game - http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Computing

Latest version - http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Computing

I need to give minecraft a try. If you haven't played dwarf fortress, I suggest giving it a shot. Or at the very least go read the stories that the game has generated. Some of them are truly epic. Epic in The Iliad epicness.

This is definitely one of the top nerdiest things I've ever seen someone display/explain in a Youtube video.

PS. I understand how addictive this game is but, damn.

Any system that can support NAND or NOR logic can be used to create an ALU, a complete CPU, memory => full computer.
Anyway, here's another such neat machine that also has the plus of not being virtual :-)

I remember 'playing' with Incentive Software's 3D Construction Kit, obligatory URL :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Construction_Kit
hxxp://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/40-application/19695

There is also the second version :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Construction_Kit_II
hxxp://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/40-application/22120

Yet Markus Persson 'copied' it there :

Nice to see the 'concept' updated, I might loose some time on it either :p

Dude, I spent THE ENTIRE DAY building Castle Fiona in the Fiona Kingdom. I'm currently undergoing a massive project - Project Glass Waterslide. I have a glass tube filled with water in front of my castle ;) .

I one built an 8-bit multiplier out of paperclips and a 9 volt battery. But seriously, is a stream of fire being used as the bus? What keeps his world from burning up like the guy who lit his fireplace and burnt his house down?

if this kind of game amazes you, you should try the powder toy too...
http://powdertoy.co.uk

It has suffered from a bit of feature bloat lately and the interface is not as straightforward as it used to be, but it remains fun and what people make using it is highly impressive. Plus, it runs on many platforms.
