GNU, GPL, Open Source John Sullivan, executive director of the Free Software Foundation: "Were it grounded in reality, Oracle's claim that copyright law gives them proprietary control over any software that uses a particular functional API would be terrible for free software and programmers everywhere. It is an unethical and greedy interpretation created with the express purpose of subjugating as many computer users as possible, and is particularly bad in this context because it comes at a time when the sun has barely set on the free software community's celebration of Java as a language newly suitable for use in the free world. Fortunately, the claim is not yet reality, and we hope Judge Alsup will keep it that way." Couldn't agree more.

Further proof that FSF and Stallman are batshit crazy, spreading their fundamentalist dogmatic ideology. The GPL is evil because it forces you to share, even if you don't use GPL. How dare the FSF fight for freedoms instead of being more corporate friendly.

* This is sarcasm, and a summary of anti-FSF comments I have encountered on OSNews.

well to be honest, Stallman is batshit crazy

Unless you are Richard Stallman, how can you "be honest" about Richard Stallman? Stallman is an uber-nerd and behaves like what you would expect from unsocial types. Other than that, what is it about Stallman that makes him supposedly "batshit" crazy? Do you know what's batshit crazy? Oracle's claims. This alone vindicates Stallman, if we forget all the other crazy corporate shit that previously vindicated his views.

There's quite a bit of evidence out there that he's batshit crazy

I keep seeing this claim, and when people are pushed to provide the evidence, the only "evidence" is a misunderstanding of the GPL, and a misconception of terms like "freedom" and "ideology" and "pragmatic".

What am I talking about? What are YOU and bowkota and your fellow hate-Stallman-at-all-costs talking about?

The link is proof of my statement that Stallman is just an uber-nerd with no social sensitivities. If that link is you and bowkota's criteria for "batshit crazy", then it proves I am right about this hate-Stallman-at-all-costs mentality.

This is the most rational thing i've read in the discussion (which the Apple troll successfully pivoted the topic to) about Stallman's mental state. Stallman *may* be suffering from Aspergers Syndrome which is generally associated with social ineptness and genius like abilities. A person that typically speaks their mind regardless of who's feelings get hurt. They are usually uncannily truthful about their feelings and that sometimes rubs people the wrong way. I would wager to bet that Stallman is much smarter by an order of magnitude and has accomplished exponentially more for and in his life than bowkota the troll that's claiming he's batshit crazy

Although Thom conveniently ignores this

From what little I read of Thom's it's more apparent that rabid anti-Thom fanatics conveniently ignores all the things he writes more than Thom ignores facts.

As for Google's lobbying... what exactly are they lobbying for?

I like how Apple nuts like to pick the first big number they come across to explain anything, instead of dissecting what those figures mean. Forget about reality distortion, Apple nuts are actually into voodoo and numerology*.

* Here's a hint: just because you use numbers does not mean you are using those numbers correctly.

I guess I'm wrong about Thom.
He preaches the evils of lobbying, yet when there's an article showing Google spending way more than anyone of else he's suddenly silent on the matter.

He preaches the evils of software patents yet when Motorola abuses FRAND patents time and time again (hint they're owned by Google) he's also silent on it. And when he decides to pick up the topic, see Xbox case, the focus is surprisingly on H264 and not the actual issue at hand: Google, sorry I meant Motorola, abusing FRAND patents to hurt a competitor.
"

Silent? You mean all the explanations he gives in comments (at least those I've come across)? I can't believe the level of obsessionou have against people you hate irrationally. Just let it go.

Yup. Totally silent about it. Yep. Really.

This is what we call confirmation bias, bowkota. You simply ignore articles that don't fit into your world view of "Thom = anti-Apple/pro-Google", so it leads to rather embarrassing situations where you submit something negative about Google which I then delete because it;s already been posted, and then you go on assuming I deleted it because I'm pro-Google.

I hope this serves as an eye opener.

This guy picks up things off of his feet and puts then in his mouth. He believes all the things in that link and everything else on his blog:

More: I'm fairly certain some of yours or mine regular habits could be found disgusting by quite a few people. NVM possibly random quirks (but it's telling how bowkota bases on something like this his efforts to disparage Dr Stallman)

Plus, from how it looks, it might as well be a simple case of (series of) automatisms that went haywire.

He was clearly focused, immersed in the conversation going on ...OK, so he happened to pick something from his feet at the time. OK, so he has eaten a small object he's holding in a particular way in his hand. What we must realize: it's entirely possible those two actions were two separate background tasks, not really conscious processes, that got combined in an unfortunate way.

We all do this. Simplest example is when we get to some room and don't know why we went there in the first place.
Heck, a buddy of mine once wanted to throw out garbage and get some food in a shop nearby. It ended with him throwing the purchase into garbage container, and putting garbage on the kitchen table...

And while it's not 100% reliable, it's also good that we often operate on such level - otherwise our minds would get swamped with what are, in reality, just constant background tasks that we pay little attention to.

BTW, not far every-other-part-of-the-body tends to be more hygienic than hands, and biting peels of skin from them (around nails and such) seems socially acceptable.

There's a very well defined cut-off point for "batshit crazy".

If someone believes either one or more of:

1) 9/11 truthers
2) Moon landing "hoax"
3) 2012

Who knows, maybe Stallman does believe one of those. But I don't think that's out there at the moment.

Anything less than any of those three is not "batshit crazy", and they're mildly batshit crazy. True batshit crazy are the Phelps from the Westboro church. In between are the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons and Glenn Becks and Ann Coulters of this world.

As for Oracle, they're no different than any other big corporation.
Google is no better no matter how much they preach "don't be evil". Although Thom conveniently ignores this, Motorola (cough Google) is attacking everyone right and left using FRAND patents. They're all looking after their own good and Google is probably the worse one of all.
http://photos.appleinsider.com/lobbying-120509.jpg [/q]

What ridiculous drivel you spew there. Who did Google attack with FRAND Patents. As for Motorola... you neglected to mention that Microsoft and Apple started this sleazy war over software-patents by suing world + dog over trivial and dubious software patents that should have never been filed and should have never been granted such as swiping on a frigging screen and rendering text before images for god's sake. Any use of FRAND patents to COUNTERSUE these sleaze-balls is FAIR GAME. Microsoft, Apple and Oracle are using sleazy software-patents to create an atmosphere where you CANNOT sit down at your computer and write system code without worrying about them coming to claim ownership of your frigging code that they did not write through the use of broad and obvious software-patents. And you come here spewing these Apple PR talking points. Self destructive much? You may not want or care to learn how write system code but it doesn't mean your hero Apple should be the only one allowed to write any system code. You bring to mind those that faithfully go out every election and vote for a particular political party against their own interests because of skillfully propagated propaganda/PR.
