I have RH 8.0.9 running on my sisters lap top it runs very slow with all the Desktop Environments, RealPlayer is broken, and sound on flash is non existent( had the latter two problems on my tower as well ). I do hope that it fixed on this version, since this is a great linux distro for begineers and some intermediate users. However there is not much difference between 8.0 to the newer betas with the exceptions of the latest version of KDE, XFree86, bug fixes, and security fixes.
Is 8.1 going to have gnome 2.2 or 2.0?

And you are saying that Kde-3.1, Xfree-4.3, Gnome 2.2, Mozilla 1.2.1, many bug fixes, and security fixes are just minor difference???
You need what? Kde 3.2m gnome-2.4 and kernel 2.6?

WindowMaker is a good alternative WM (easily customizable) i wish Redhat would include Blackbox & Icewm as alternative WMs too...

I use, KDE in RH8 and if you turn of the bluecurve stuff it works fine. In fact i find it more stable then gnome by a large margin.
I have recently upgraded KDE via apt to KDE3.1 and it is still the champ. I have all my kids working on KDE for everything which they couldn't do in gnome as it kept crashing and locking up. but they have been using KDE for about 3 months. without a problem.
they do: homework, movies, web, games and sorts of stuff...

I read that in Redhat 8 they didn't consider CD players and movie players as being part of it. Does anyone know if 8.1 has changed their stance?
Well it's 6 ISO's counting the source RPM's. I am almost positive at least XMMS would be included.

there is a cd player in redhat 8 - the fuss was over MP3 codecs, not anything else.
install apt4rpm,
then run apt-get update
and
apt-get install mplayer*
apt-get install xmms*
all done
sheesh that was hard

What apt archives did you use for kde3.1 on RH8? I tried the kde-redhat projects archives yesterday for their testing branch but they didn't work worth a damn.
I'd apreciate it if you could just cut and past the archives out of your /etc/apt/sources.list

I'm just amazed that anyone actually run redhat. It is just sooo bloated with junk. even more so than windows and i bet you'all dont even use a tenth of whats on thoose SIX cd's...
and why do redhat keep on putting stuff in different dirs than the standard ones? whats the point?

It's only 3 cd's. The other 3 are source. If you want to be amazed by the number of cd's why not go and bitch about SuSE. What are they up to now...seven?
BTW...thanks for the sources.list. I'm having the same problem as the last time I tried though(they are the same sources). When I do my apt-get upgrade (through command line or synaptic), I get an error about not being able to get the sources.list file from the ftp site. Manual ftp to their site works fine however.

and a full working install of win2k pro with all the trimmings is anout the same. so what gives?
you can slim it down if you want plenty by not installing stuff, like games and docs source code, its all upto you on how much and what you install.
and redhat follows the file system layout better the alot of the others how about suse, and changing the mounts from
/mnt to /media?
and by using redhat, its much easyer for newbieess to get help as alot of ppl use it and they also provide ISO's for free.
and alot of companys use redhat, so again ?

Does anyone know where to find gnome 2.2 rpms i can update through apt-get? Also what kernel comes Phoebe with? 2.4.20?
I use Redhat because:
1. It's secure
- Especially with the built in firewall and up2date
2. It just works
- I don't have to mess around with anything to get it to work.
3. It's Linux
- All the same old stuff, stability, speed, etc..
4. It's well supported...
- I can get rpm packages for Zend software, etc. I don't want to waste time compiling. I gotta get work done...
Redhat is just easy to maintain. I don't need anything fancy and I just want to have a stable OS that I can use to write code...
I don't think that RedHat is bloated. It runs quite well on my home machine (400mhz system with 176MB ram)
The only thing Redhat doesn't have that I want is KDE 3.1. I didn't like older versions of it and I REALLY like to be able to use the fish in Konqueror to browse remote filesystems. I know some people hate KDE so if you do then you can use something else... 
I'll stick with KDE for myself...

Around June-ish, however, I would wait till around 2.6.2-2.6.3 when alot of the x.0 bugs have been worked out, HOWEVER, from what I hear there will not be the same problems that the 2.4.x release had in regards to the broken VM which has fixed up in around 2.4.8 (IIRC)

Not to be overly rude ... but if you have to ask that, good luck with learning the intricacies of Linux.
Of course, if you're just gonna use GNOME or KDE, and not much else, you might be ok ...
People don't just wake up one morning and know the difference beween binary & ascii downloads.
You have to learn somewhere, and comments like that just scare/push newbies away, not to mention making you look like an elitist prat.
binaries are the 0's and 1's that a computer can read. ascii is just plain text that a human can read. i'm sure there's a more correct and complex explanation, but no one really cares. if you want programs, documents, videos, etc. they're binaries. if you want something that can be read in notepad or some other text editor, it's ascii you want.
not everyone knows everything. so when someone asks, explain politely.
by the way... any screenshots? i'm too lazy to download 3 iso's just to see how it's going. i'll buy the box when it hits 8.2. oh, hope they don't get rid of sndconfig (as they say in their release notes). i need that for my crappy cs4236b on board soundcard. first they get rid of mp3, now they want me to not have sound at all! i don't want to configure it by hand when i can get it done automatically with one command! bah!
If you haven't tried the latest cvs of e17, you shouldn't speak about it at all. It's far more beautiful and technical innovative than ANY other wm in the RedHat distros.

I agree.....One thing the Linux world needs is more innovation and E17 is a good example. Sure its taking a long time, but when it finally comes out it should be really somthing to see.

Actually, Matthew, 2.4 series become REALLY usable only on 2.4.10.

I updated my source list (from the information in kex's post). However, when I try to apt-get install kde3 I get the following:

What's wrong with that? He certainly doesn't have any business goals he has to meet. If I was inclined to do a rant it would be about modern societies general lack of patience, and the emphasis on instant gratification.
Anyone know/tested if Creative Audigy 2 works "out of the box/iso" with 8.1 beta, or do I have to download drivers myself?
