Syllable, AtheOS This is the first release of a Live CD for Syllable (30 MB), created by BurningShadow, based on Syllable 0.5.3 while it includes Arno's dock Alpha 1. This first version of the Live CD is far from perfect, as there are some random crashes to the fact that it is running off a read-only filesystem, we were told.

kewl! Downloading it now.

Would the autors be interested in bugreports? I'm sure people will experience strange things :-)

yes

I'm sure they'd welcome bug reports. It includes Arno's Dock, which isn't even in the main release yet. That's cool.

Oh no

Why did they reverse the minimize/maximize buttons compared to Windows? Just to be different?

VPC??
by Richard Fillion on Tue 11th May 2004 23:39 UTC

Any word on how well it works on VPC? I'm downloading it now to give it a try, but it's going painfully slow. :/

Fails to boot in VPC, damn. I have yet to get any OS but Windows in VPC!

I`m running Fedora Core 1/2, Debian Sarge, and Slackware 7.1 on Virtual PC 2004 without any problems (host OS Windows XP Pro).

I haven't tried any Linux distros yet, I don't have a need for that, OSX is unixy enough for my liking ;)

yay

I hope the livecd gets updated frequently. It's great to have these kind of things if you are like me and like to try out OSs all the time. No need to keep all those partitions around.

Be aware that this isn't really representative

This CD will crash all the time because Syllable boots it's filesystem directly off of it (no ramdisk), and the CD of course is unwritable. Syllable is still new -- some software deals badly with the unexpected (like not being able to write new configurations). On a harddrive, this thing works much better. However, I very much want to upgrade all my stuff (icons, gcc, Arno's toolbar and everything) to what's on this CD -- is there cvs access?

Erik

its not about unixy

"I haven't tried any Linux distros yet, I don't have a need for that, OSX is unixy enough for my liking ;) "

you implied that you only got one os working. other os'es was pointed out to you. linux is not about being unixy anyway

We have a FAQ for Syllable on Microsoft Virtual PC at http://www.syllable.org/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=6&cat... . I & others have successfully ran Syllable on VPC, although Syllable 0.5.3 presents a slightly different set of problems because of the new ATA disk driver.

However, I very much want to upgrade all my stuff (icons, gcc, Arno's toolbar and everything) to what's on this CD -- is there cvs access?

Yes, anonymous CVS is available from the Sourceforge CVS server. For more information you should read the Sourceforge documentation, but for now you can retrieve Syllable modules from cvs.sourceforge.net E.g. "cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net/cvsroot/syllable co syllable/system/sys/kernel/kernel" will get you the kernel.

Arnos dock is not in CVS presently, but you can download it from http://www.geocities.com/arno_klenke/dock-alpha1.tgz Untar it and run the install script!

Did you ever go to click the maximize button but accidentally click the X and the window closes? I'm clumsy enough to do that from time to time.

Now a days, I just double click the title bar to maximize, or keyboard: ALT, SPACEBAR, X. Most Linux desktops do this as well and of course Windows (wish OSX would too).

No. I've never done that and I certainly do use Windows.

About: Syllable Live CD Available
by BurningShadow on Fri 14th May 2004 10:08 UTC

Cibus, yes I will wellcome any bug report, related to the LiveCD. Any bug report not related to the LiveCD, will be passed on the the relevant people, so just report ;)
syllable{at}burningshadow.dk

Chris, about including new stuff; I will continue to do that, unless someone tell me not to.

Rain, the LiveCD will continue to get updated, and there will be a release sometime next week, just keep an eye on syllable.org or BurningShadow.dk
The next one will include an install system, like the one on the official Syllable 0.5.3 install CD.

About VirtualPC and VMWare:
Making the LiveCD boot, is NOT something I will work on, for two reasns:
1) I don't have the software, to test if it boots.
2) It's so easy for you, to create a new virtual disk, so you should use the official distrib. as that one is much more stable than the LiveCD.
