their development on Power Desktop and Biz Desktop had unfortunately taken a back seat.
Don't mince words, Abhi. You canned it. The engineer, if you couldn't use him for another project, has been fired and you will only release it if there is significant customer interest, which you have computed to be in the same likelihood as Vishnu playing ping pong with Buddha.
ELX develops sl.......ow!
Hope there would be a better Linux distribution from India which would provide good support too!
Then, I shall come out of the cocoon of Windoze XP and Ubuntu Linux to buy that distro, even for a price.
But ELX is extremely vague as far as support is concerned.
And AFAIK, there is no text based installations for computers with exotic graphics card which I happen to own.
Hope this helps ELX to come out with something blazing!
Sad that Redmond Linux and ELX were once considered at par with each other.
The former has progressed tremendously with Lycoris although not w/o controversies but the latter has almost stagnated!
"And AFAIK, there is no text based installations for computers with exotic graphics card which I happen to own.

elx is basically modified redhat and uses the anaconda installer which has a text version. it uses kde as a default desktop and nuola icons but their tools seems to be written on gtk.
I didnt find anything particularly appealing to me in that distro though it was quite popular as a user friendly distro before they stopped giving out updates in any regular or predictable way
HI
Thanks Anonymous!
I wasnt sure abt this bit and so put the AFAIK phrase!
Can you point me how to initiate the text based installation.
Thanks in advance!
So it uses the Trustix base, has the Anaconda installer from Redhat 7.3 (hmmm) and...a few nice webmin interfaces. So, what exactly is special about this? You can find other distros that are easy to admin as well that come fully locked down. What specifically does ELX offer that people should bite on? What specific changes does it offer in addition?
This review was very...thin on any sort of details
"ELX is offering ELX Power Server as Open Source and is actively looking to build a community around the product."
Everybody in FOSS is looking to build a community around a product or project, and these guys actually had quite a thriving and growing community going . . . and then they totally left them hanging. After the way their community got burned, and the did get burned IMHO (no updates, dead forums, no intereaction from devs, etc), I can't see ANY community willing to spring up around any of their products for quite some time.
The FOSS movement is a good idea, but it is also a bit open to exploitation by companies who seek to build communities around their particular distributions, or to put it more blindly, get a bunch of developers developing their distribution for free and then selling it back to them to make money.
Frankly I find this attitude far more annoying than the proprietary OS companies that pay for developement and then ask the consumer to pay for their expense plus some profit.
Long live FOSS, but here's hoping it evolves in a direction better than the model I described in the first paragraph...
Who cares... can we just rm -rf /ThisPost ... its nothing but a pure pr scam to get interest....
"Can you point me how to initiate the text based installation. "
thats easy. same as redhat
type in "linux text" during the initial boot prompt from the first cd
"This review was very...thin on any sort of details"
well.the fact that developers were very active in the community is a direct way was a big attraction at that time. not anymore
"but it is also a bit open to exploitation by companies who seek to build communities around their particular distributions, or to put it more blindly, get a bunch of developers developing their distribution for free and then selling it back to them to make money. "
it would only work when developers get something out of the distro. if they dont they wouldnt volunteer. if they do get back something then you have nothing to complain about.
This sounds like a good option, I'm currently using the home edition of ClarkConnect (clarkconnect.com) which is nice however more advanced features cost money, it also uses webmin which is a very easy to use admin panel. All in all i think i'll give ELX power server a try. Nice review
Actually really nothing new here at all IMO. You can get all of these features and more on many of the existing distributions, and much better supported (Redhat, Mandrake, etc).
at the top where it says the page number it says EXL ;-p
I've been searching for a while, a good "all around", stripped-down server distro. Just for the basic server-needs of file server, web/app server, firewall, etc.
I came up with ArchLinux, Debian (now looking @ Ubuntu), Slackware.
The main reason being: package management and updateability.
I looked forward to ELX Power Server 1.0, but not really convinced.
Some advice would help!
Thanks,
Diego.
SME server hands down IMHO.http://contribs.org
They will also soon be coming out with a commercially supported version.
I noticed though they they have come out with a new version of their desktop. I downloaded it from Distrowatch the other day. Not bad they have upgraded it some. It is fast and easy to use. Comes with firefox by default.
It's pretty nice.
I am yet to download and try ELX. BTW what is kernel version? Is it 2.6.x? or 2.4.x?
the bastards are under the same company called mavcap. both elx and norhtec, despite their different locations are owned by the same people. notice the lack of disclosure of this information and the general lack of any real details.
sad...
