Linux A week ago a co-worker of mine showed me an advertisement of the LinuxWorld Conference in Boston from Feb 14-17th at the Hynes Convention Center. What a way to kick off Valentines Day week with a little geek-fest. I never went to an expo before so I thought it would be great fun to meet the companies and people responsible for Linux.

Would that be like core wars?

'The only thing I really wished for was Mandrake to show up since that is my favorite distro."

Mandrake is there, just not with a disply.

Nice article, thanks. My two roommates and I are in Boston this week for Linuxworld as well having driving halfway across the country (from western IL) and this article is a very good overview. Not to mention it mentioned a couple booths giving away goodies that I missed yesterday and will be visiting today.

Hey there were never any booths babes when I went to Linuxworld when it was held NYC.

30 day updates from Novell... After 30 days, every thing is the same, you just can not install patches... How ever, I have seen a guy who is taking the patches for SuSE 9.1 and changing the RPM to install onto Novell Desktop.. People have been known to get their updates that way...

I guess that is leagal, you just lose support, which is a nice thing about NLD.

there was also a 12 way opteorn system in a 3u case made by cray at the amd booth. pretty sick stuff. one interesting thing i heard was "Fedora is already made for dummies, why do they need write a book about it.", btw u can get vmware for free at the vmware booth. there was also applied data near the sun booth they had a bunch of embedded systems, the hp superdomes were pretty cool too, and the ibm ppc blades. i thought the gentoo booth sucked! they could of at least had t-shirts, or portage on os x. veritas was pretty interesting with storage foundation 4. sun jerks wouldn't let me enter the lan party because i am under 18 would of dominated at ut2k4! u can also get jds2 for free at the sun booth.

It may be premature...

... to speculate about a company's future based on comments made in an OS News article, but I worry a bit about Intel. "Beautiful girls from Intel gave us bags and a chance to win $100 American Express Gift Cards." In contrast, AMD "had tons of their servers running 64-bit versions of Linux and many professionals discussed the AMD roadmap." Which company sounds focused on their core business?

I enjoyed the article.

Linux World
by TaterSalad on Wed 16th Feb 2005 22:04 UTC

I used to go the Linux World conventions when they had them in NYC. Why they moved it to Boston I will never understand. Anyway its a great convention if you want lots of free stuff. Also pretty good if your a business and use Linux. But if your just a home user then there really isn't much there for you.

Yeah, awesome quote. Of course the majority of people on the planet haven't been born with a computer in their hands, or like to spend an entire day trying to work out dependencies.

It is a shame this is the intelligence of some linux supporters, who make all of us look like a--holes. If i heard someone say that, I'd likely punch him in the mouth for being such a dimwit.

I did today, I walked up to Warren and shook his hand, and thanked him for such a wonderfull Distro. he was very shy, down to earth guy, we spent some time chatting this morning,

Anyone there today (wednesday) may have seen me, I was strolling around with a metallica shirt on.

I won SuSE 9.2 from Novell today, got a whole buncha stoof, it was an awsome experiance

Just got back
by sealtit on Thu 17th Feb 2005 03:55 UTC

I just got back from Boston myself. It was quite an amazing experience. I met with one of the Mono guys (can't remember his name) and was able to ask some questions about the Mono apps I'm writing. Plus I went to a "Meet and Greet" with the Gentoo Developers at a local bar, it's not everyday you can grab a beer with the guys who maintain your operating system.

All in all, an awesome day. Now I have to find out what to do with all this free stuff.

I'm with The Linux Link Tech Show:
http://thelinuxlink.net/tllts/
and the whole crew went to the expo on Tuesday. We had a great time and met some very cool people (Nat Friedman, Jeremy Garcia from linuxquestions.org, Maddog Hall, Doc Searls, Warren Woodford). We recorded an interview with Nat Friedman from Novell. Check out our latest episode:
