Conversations I am sorry that my comments in this thread:

http://www4.osnews.com/conversation/46b8cfca/-500_!

Came across as: "Anonymous Penguin against Thom"

That couldn't be further than the truth, even if in my last post I lost my temper and linked to a DistroWatch Weekly where the "protagonist" was Thom.
Heck, I even used to regrets that I couldn't mod Thom up!

The real meaning of my posts was: "Anonymous Penguin feels that there is something wrong with the moderation". Now Thom is *not* the moderation.
But I need to explain better. The true, deep meaning was: "Anonymous Penguin really hates peer moderation"
Since peer moderation started I have been building anger up every time I have been modded down just because of an opinion, and there was nothing I could do.
On the other hand, if you say something shallow but popular, especially at the beginning of a thread, you'll be modded up to the sky!

That thread was way too heated for some reason, but now that it's been closed, the issue resolved, and we've all had a day or two to reflect on what the tension actually was, I think we can all agree it's about current moderation not cutting it.

Frankly, I think moderation, in general, works very well - the bad comments are usually below my threshold, the good ones are well highlighted. Yes, shallow but generally decent comments are often way upvoted, but then, that is the same thing that happens on every single major site like this - Slashdot, Digg, Engagdet, etc. The problem with this version of moderation is mostly that it's too easy to take it personally when people mod you down.

That is why I decided, against every fiber of my being, to dig back into v3 code to backport the new mod system. We'll see a new mod system within the month.

"Disgaree" votes aren't counted against you, only that comment. Only "report" votes count against you, and those will be meta-moderated and reviewed by Admins for fairness. Your trust won't be hurt by of a single or even a handful of comments.

Thanks Adam. The above makes now a lot of sense.

Now, we have to hope that report won't be abused like downvotes are now... although if that becomes a factor, you could always tie the ability to report to trust or postcount or userage or something.

Which do you think it should be tied to?

...and I'm sure both Thom and Adam appreciate your candor in explaining your side of the story. I certainly do :-).

That is so true, but sadly, not only of OSNews. I have seen the same reaction to shallow statements in every public forum I have ever attended. Even our so-called 'betters' in government seem to react in this same manner when dealing with even the most crucial of debates.

I do sympathise with your point as theres often posts modded up which aren't even factually accurate. I seem to remember one post were somebody commented how naff Windows CLI was because you can't even pipe commands (which is simply not true) yet they get modded up several times for it.

At the end of the day though (and as Thom as said before) there's no ideal way of modding (in fact in an ideal world you just wouldn't get idiots posting) so all you can do is grin and bare being marked down hoping that someone more insightful will have the courtesy to mark you up again.
