NO duplicates in sidebar

Conversations Hi OSnews staff,

I want to attract your attention to a strange bug in the website. I've been getting an 'Important Notice' lately on OSnews about duplicate items in my sidebar (it's quite annoying because it appears above the other news items, screams to me in red, and I can't get rid of it).

Now I don't have any duplicate items in my sidebar, and what's even worse, if I 'click here', go to my account preferences and 'Set Boxes to Default' (and save), I get the message 'sidebar choices ok', but the notice remains where it was.

I hope it won't take too much time to get rid of this...

You are on the default theme, which includes the "account information", the "search", and the "comic" automatically in the header. So if you have these in the sidebar, they are dupes. Remove those from your sidebar and you're all set.

Well actually, while I appreciate being warned that things have changed, I like the search item in the sidebar, and am willing to put up with a nag box to keep it there. It would be nice to have an option to disable the warning while keeping the layout that *I* like.

Unfortunately, if things go as I think they're going to, we're going to be disabling themes and some of the sidebar boxes shortly in order to make some further site improvements, so it may not matter much.

Then I think selecting 'Set Boxes to Default' should not select the duplicated items. That is the bug.

It shouldn't do that. Please hold down the shift key and refresh, I think you're using cached javascript.

It works, I think I was confused. By the way, I had never looked through the possible side-bar items. I added the "Cool Software" and "Featured Users". I never knew they were there.

I *click here*, set defauts, save changes, *changes applied* it says but the changes are not there. I am using FF3.b4, but tried it with (good as new)MSIE6 and it doesn't work either.

I've been annoyed by this message for a while, but not bothered to say anything -- it's a trivial error, in the grand scheme.

But now, at least the message actually is warning of an actual duplication:

That url should end in .png, sorry. Just missed the arbitrary cutoff.

Anyhow, that shows two duplicated boxes that can't be fixed.

I'm confused. If I can't get rid of the search bar and the user account thing at the top, and I can't duplicate them in the sidebar, why even offer them as options in the sidebar?

Now I have duplicate content, and I can't get rid of it... I tried shift-refresh, shift-save, anything... I seem to be unable to save any settings. Weird.

This is amusing: at the top of my sidebar, there are now two "Duplicate Content" warning boxes, and they seem to be the only actual duplicate content.

Yeah, same here... Wish I could get rid of them. Apparently, the controls to change sidebar items don't really work properly with either Firefox or IE7.

Does anyone have any hints for us to get rid of this problem? Thanks...

The "reset boxes to default" button seemed to do the trick for me (but it would be nice if it were a bit more clear how to fix the problem - I didn't realize the solution until reading this thread).

Which browser are you using? 'cause none of the changes I make (including 'reset to default') sticks for me... neither on FF3b4 nor on IE7.
