I'd like someone to please point out to be where I am trollish - for the sake of humouring me and maybe me actually understanding how this so-called 'moderation' system works. If I do one thing I get marked down, if I do another thing I get marked down, I do a completely different thing and I get marked down. Someone tell me where I am going wrong - if apparently as Thom and Adam claim that I am always wrong and the moderation system is always perfect and without fault.
Post a Comment
Sigh. A very big and long deprived of sense sigh.
I just don't know what I'm supposed to say or explain that hasn't yet been said a million times or that hasn't yet been explained a million times.
Sure, I could repeat that the system is far too intelligent to worry about a few down moderations. That it is apparently working, since you are still our fourth most trusted user. I could tell you again that sometimes, yes, you certainly deserve the downmods you get because sometimes you tend to be far too aggressive. I could repeat that the system is indeed not perfect. I could repeat that your expectations of the system are different than from what is designed to do. I could repeat that the system's goals is to weed out spam, and that it does that beyond our expectations. I could repeat and repeat and repeat an repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat...
...but it doesn't seem to matter.
Yes, some of the posts I do deserve to get moderated down - but there are some posts that I can't even work out where I went wrong!
Again, how is this trollish:
http://www.osnews.com/permalink?357100 - marked down to 0
How is this trollish:

and this:
http://www.osnews.com/permalink?355915 - marked down to -2, how the hell was that trollish?
For me, I don't moderate peoples comments down unless it is spam - for me, by me moderating down the post instead of making a reply critiquing where the individual went wrong - its actually stating, "I can't refute so instead I'll silence you by moderating you down".
Or this one here:

How is that trollish? a point deducted for what?
If you're going to have people deduct points - force them to write the reason why and have their name and their reason shown publicly for all to see; so that those who are abusing the system can be shown for the scum they are.
I'm at the end of my wits here. what part of my comment don't you understand? IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOUR POSTS GET A FEW DOWNMODS. The system doesn't care about that. The system cares about removing spam, and it does that perfectly. I get unfair downmods all the time, but you don't see my crying about every other week.
This is it. I'm asking Adam to hide all individual comment scores, as people like you are so addictively hung up on them that it just scares me. What matters is your overall trust, the bigger picture, and when you look at that, you are in the top four of our most trusted users.
Because you're arguing that Linux is neither a "real OS" nor has software that the everyday desktop user needs.
Both is bullshit - as proved by the millions of computer uses that run Linux on the desktop daily.

You're pretty much just arguing about the tone someone used when replying to you. That's hardly on topic.
The first comment seemed a bit harsh to be modded down though. Maybe you just hit a nerve with the fanboys?
Kaiwai, I'm over this and I'm over debating it with you.
GET OVER IT.
The system is based on peer moderation, and it DOES generally remove crap and leave comments visible. Now and again, opinionated people get mis-modded. It barely registers in the system. The people who mid-mod have such little weight it doesn't affect your experience in any meaningful way -- except you acting like a crybaby every time it happens.
This is the LAST, absolute FINAL conversation I'm going to permit that is solely posted to grouse and moan about it. The next ones are getting locked and/or removed. "Conversations" is not for you to post your complaints, incessant whining, or personal gripes about the editors. Believe it or not, I'm in a good mood, or I'd delete this and ban you. We don't host the site so you can trash talk the editors.
To be very clear with you, my friend: if you don't like the mod system, if getting knocked a point by one of your peers so angers you that you can't take it, by all means, please go away. You waste more time and screen real estate bitching about meta info than commenting anyway.
For those actually willing to discuss a plausible, realistic modification to the mod system that would increase effectiveness or just make users generally feel better, you have my email address.
As it turns out, there are a few users who are systematically modding *everything* you post down. As a direct result, we have banned these users. We do not tolerate mass-modding, period.
Before you go crazy and prove yourself right, ask yourself why people might want to silence you.
We'll take care of the admin side of this.
So he actually did have an issue, but perhaps he wasn't reporting it in to the right place (Conversations). Perhaps it should be noted that if you think you are being systematically modded down then the correct thing to do is notify an Admin.
However, I do think everyone takes the modding too seriously.
Resume normal transmission...
No doubt. Being right about the abusive mods doesn't make the constant hijacking of conversation threads right. We are incredibly open, I think it's safe to say, so freaking out and posting long-winded rants as a first step is a sure fire way to get on our bad side.
I think we're much more tolerant of meta-discussion than any other similar site.
For the record, the mods had very little effect on his trust, his scores, and his standing in the system. Some have been reversed, some won't be, because it JUST... DOESN'T... MATTER.
You are carving yourself a vicious circle here. The more you cry out over moderation, the more people take a disliking to you. Kawaii, you can make some smart comments sometimes -- and you always ruin that by complaining about meta.
If you are so hung up on the number next to your name, then just stop commenting, and nobody can mod you down then. As it stands you are doing yourself no favours. The mod system works, very well. It filters out noise from individuals voting unfairly; and if you truly have an issue with people ganging up on you, then contact us via *email* instead of on the discussion board, where *everybody* can see what an ass you're being. K, thanks.
