OSNews, Generic OSes A common heard question in the operating systems world is, 'if the alternatives to Windows are so much better, why aren't people en masse switching to them?' People come up with all sorts of answers to this question, but in fact, the social psychology world already has a fairly simple answer to this question. Let's start with hardware and software support.
My computer is not usable with Linux.
My favourite program does not run well on Linux (even in Wine).
My favourite web browser does not run well on Linux.

It's this simple: If you want me to use an operating system it must run on my computer and it must run programs capable of performing the tasks I want to perform.
