Hmm...current video processors have become more and more like specialized massively parallel processors.
I honeslty wouldn't be surprised to see nvidia come up with something like the Cell processor where the SPE's are actual programmable shader type units, of course more powerful (or specialized?) than the SPE's on Cell.
Ahh speculation is fun....
