I believe Dell wants to fight Macs and the rest of the competition with the Ubuntu Linux offering as well. The difference is that Linux can be used to fight at the high end of the market in things like "workstations" or power-horses, and at the same time, they can provide cheaper and stabler platforms as well.

If it works out, I am sure Dell could extend it to worldwide adoption, where such characteristics of Linux could be better exploited, like in poorer countries, for instance.
