Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu Ubuntu 7.10 has been released. "Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Edition adds an enhanced user interface, improved hardware support, multiple monitor support and integrated desktop search. Ubuntu 7.10 Server Edition features improved functionality, manageability, pro-active security and hardware compatibility and delivers a rapid deployment platform for developers and businesses. New versions of Kubuntu and Edubuntu, derivatives of Ubuntu aimed at KDE enthusiasts and the education community respectively, are also being released at the same time." And a review. That is how most things evolve - features that work appear across the board, features that don't slip away into obscurity.

Operating Systems will converge on similar ideas not because they are deliberately copying each other, but because there are only so many ways of performing a task optimally. Form and function often have a very tight relationship. Wheels can be designed to take on a myriad of appearances, but all wheels will converge on the defining feature of being generally circular in cross section. OSes will converge on similar features because of user preferences and expectations.

I don't care if OO.o copies the ribbon, because it is a good feature and a better way of accessing the functions in MS Office than in previous versions.

I don't care if Gnome and KDE have a start-menu search like Vista - it is a sensible and usable place to put it.

Good features should be copied.
