Unlike other phones though, the screen is covered with glass. HUGE difference. This is a case where you should get your facts straight. Google "PC-World iPhone Stress Test". Most people will be amazed how durable the iPhone is. I dropped mine on the side walk on the display side and after my heart skipped a beat, I picked it up and there was a little tiny tiny scratch on the chrome outline. The screen was *pristine*.
As far as 3G, coming from Sprint with EVDO, EDGE is definitely slower but having WiFi is better than 3G anyways. Where I live, every 3 steps a new wireless network shows up. 3G at the launch of the iPhone also greatly cuts down on battery life, which is AWESOME on the iPhone. Sure, I'm rationalizing a feature that would have been nice to have but so far I haven't had a time where I really needed 3G. EDGE speeds are adequate, if I happen to (surprisingly) not have a WiFi network.
I don't know why people freak out the battery either as it's not the only device to do this, but that just might be me.
