This, to me, is the sort of issue that illustrates the mindset of the GNOME devs compared to the KDE devs.
With KDE, you have a fair amount of cruft accumulate due to incremental platform-building over many years, this tends to make the UI a little unwieldy at first glance, but in terms of functionality, provides an excellent and complete environment.
With GNOME, everyone seems eager to throw out everything after a year or so of development to focus on the next cool toys leaving the actual functionality of the desktop in disarray.
One only has to look at gedits lack of gnome-vfs support, the continuing lack of a menu editor and the introduction of 'spatial' mode followed by about 6 releases trying to patch up the incredibly awful flaws in its implementation to see that the GNOME project suffers from flawed vision, and some rather poor architectural decisions.
Compare Kate and Gedit side by side, or look at konqueror and nautilus, and the difference in capabilities between them is staggering, with the KDE apps making the GNOME apps look like half-assed toys.
Even Konsole vs GNOME-Terminal is eye-opening, with GNOME-Terminal using vastly more resources than Konsole for seemingly far less functionality.
And a previous poster is quite correct in pointing out that GNOME will soon all-but-require you to run a non-free system (i.e. NVidia drivers) in order to avoid glacial performance.
I used to be a big fan of GNOME, but no more. And no matter how many incremental releases get made with more slow, stupid eye candy, until the GNOME devs can find the time to address basic platform-API support within their apps and reduce the horrendous resource requirements, they have lost a user in me.
