Gentoo got other problems - used it for years but things are gotten too screwed up and a portage replacement ain't going to fix it no matter what languague it is written in.

To recap:

I used Gentoo back in the other century because it would work with a lot of multimedia formats other distros wouldn't have a go.Legally? - well troubling at best but nobody sued them yet so what?
Commercial distros can't do that because they have a business (as in commercial) that has assets - clear enough?

Anyway - ever after Gentoo started to grow there was no QA anymore. If you got a working system or not simply depends on the apps installed.Since I tend to have rather a lot of apps installed my system got borked more often more frequent (being w/o compiler,Gnome2,expat2 anyone??)

Systems smashing bugs being open for month being the norm plus an administration that doesn't know the first thing about what they are doing I decided to get the hell out of there.

Sure - you can use it for servers if tracking all the security stuff personally sounds like fun or/and somebody is willing to pay you for it.

USE flags and compiler flags?
Give me a break - the guys at gcc don't know for sure if you bother to read the doc's.
How I am going to find the magic combination that gives me the 20 percent more power to justify the maint cost?
