Gnome There is a controversy in the Linux world. It doesn't have to do with Microsoft, or anything overtly technical. It may seem, to the outsider, the open source equivalent of the question, "Boxers or briefs?" But it's much more serious than that. More here.

As far as kde4 is concerned you are seeing what you want to see so there's probably nothing to be gained pointing out to you that its NOT FINISHED YET!
Gnome is fine as a beginners os and if it suits your needs fine, just use it shut up. KDE does not have to dumb down to gnomes level just to make people like you feel better about your choice of desktop. Kde is looking to the future and gnome, as you correctly state, isn't going anywhere. Deal with it.
