I guess two things that get my goat about a certain OS are that a) whenever I apply a software patch the whole OS shuts down and reboots whether I like it or not; and b) whenever I go near this OS my bank account seems to shrink alarmingly.
Fonts and icons are often underestimated but without them our computers would be next to useless. Using poor quality ones is is very iffy for the unfortunate user. If one of those mega-rich multimedia companies wanted to do something really nice for open source, then they could release or commission some really top quality free fonts and icons under the glp that could form the basis of the interfaces on *nix (or make grants to some of the existing toilers to perfect their game). That, and perhaps a generous grant to xorg to help keep both display technology and anti-aliasing in tiptop shape. Hello, Adobe, Google and co?
