Maybe it ain't GNOME's fault half of the new packages didn't install at first, so I spent a nice couple of "F*CKIN H*LLS" installing dependencies one after another until I finally got Nautilus to not to crash on logon.

--SNIP--

But Compiz still crashes on every logon, and a crash occurs also on first manual run, so I need to run fusion-icon a whopping two times before having my desktop ready-to-use.

I would suspect it's in your system the issue.. I am not saying it's not possible that it's a GNOME bux, but I am running Mandriva 2008 Spring and I have GNOME 2.22 installed and running just fine. Compiz et al installed and working. Maybe just try a reinstall? It could fix the issue you're having.
