Shooting or stabbing someone can be argued from the perspective of a crime of passion. All it takes is a second to pull the trigger or to thrust a knife into someone. On the other hand, strangulation requires that you constantly apply force while the victim struggles to get free and thus requires a lot more determination. To strangle your wife for seconds/minutes while ignoring her struggles ... that's murder.
I hope they throw the book at him.
