X11, Window Managers Over the past couple of months, and especially over the past couple of weeks, I've been working very hard to write and complete my thesis. I performed all the work on Windows 7, but now that the thesis is finally done, submitted, and accepted, I installed Ubuntu - and immediately I was reminded of why I do not do any serious work on Linux: the train wreck that is X.org.

Maybe, but not even nearly as much as this article. Based on your wording... I'd say,,, not good hardware for linux or at least very poor supported hardware.

As far as restoring state? Bull... couldn't care less. DRIVER SHOULD NOT CRASH AT ALL. And it doesn't for me. I doubt I saw one X or kernel crash in 5 years.

btw. I'm really curious what your so called advanced use is... Mine usual needs are anjuta, monodevelop lot of terminals, evolution, open office and at least 30-40 browser tabs opened on different desktops. Sometimes even more time than a month not closing single window while working. Yes, I'm a developer.

Then again, I buy my machines with linux in mind and follow HCL when buying machines.
