Linux Open source 3D graphics drivers for ATI R600 garphics cards has been submitted to the kernel-next tree for possible inclusion in the Linux kernel 2.6.32. "David Airlie has pushed a horde of new code into his drm-next Git tree, which is what will get pulled into the Linux 2.6.32 kernel once the merge window is open. Most prominently, this new DRM code brings support for kernel mode-setting with R600 class hardware as well as 3D support."

Note that there are actually 4 packages that all have to work together to provide the 3D acceleration. The kernel is one, and that code will almost certainly be released as part of 2.6.32 before the end of the year, although its in the Staging area to demonstrate it's not considered completely stable yet.

The others are libdrm, mesa, and xf86-video-ati, which all support 3D in their master branches now. I wouldn't be surprised to see them all push out a release for Christmas, but it's possible you may still need to use unreleased code for a while there. I'm sure it will depend on how well the more widespread use of the driver goes until then.
