Even if I modded BluenoseJake and Panajev up, I'd love to agree with you. Howewever they are right. Microsoft had announced in the past they were going to merge Direct3D with OpenGL.
Not exactly the same but they had a proprietary protocol to read mails from Hotmail directly in Outlook Express (Webdav). This protocol had been reverse engineered and integrated into Linux (hotway). Microsoft then decided to change its Webdav protocol for some other closed protocol. When Webdav was about to be replaced, due to pressure (GMail ?), they came back to the standard pop3 over SSL.
I doubt the same will happen for Direct3D because it's already THE standard for 3D games on Windows, OpenGL only being a follower.
