They told me the same thing 6 months ago when I called Apple Service to fix my DVD (I have AppleCare). The guy said if they find out I smoked near machine, they can't fix it. Well, I took it to service, they replaced it without a question (and yes, I smoke around my machine)... same when my HDD died a month ago. If you ask me it more depends on how radical antismoking laws are in a certain country. It's BS in the end... then all warranties should be voided for smokers?
This kinda reminds me on some law anti-smoking activists tried to force in our country. They wanted to forbid a person to smoke in his own home because the smoke could go out through window and to another window the building, causing second hand smoking. Idiocy.
