The Task Pooper concept looks like an evolved (drag animation) of the workspaces concept (IIRC the name) of OS/2 Workplace Shell (WPS)
WPS folders had a setting that made the it work like the real folder, if you have open documents when that folder is closed, all documents were saved and closed simultaneously, the next time you open the folder the previous state is restored and all documents previously open are reopened
