It's no secret to anyone that while Apple sued HTC, the lawsuit is more about Google than HTC itself. Since Android is open source, and owned by no one, it's kind of hard to go after Google itself, and as such, HTC was the prime target, since it is the number one Android smartphone maker. The New York Times has an in-depth article up about the subject, with a whole boatload of quotes from people within the two companies, and it paints a picture of all this being a highly emotional and personal vendetta - especially from Apple's side.

The fact that it's purely functional essentially means that building a new configuration cannot overwrite previous configurations. Most of the other features follow from this." Interesting approach. A Linux distribution, sure, but with some very refreshing ideas about system configuration.

Google added, among other features, C/C++ support to its new version of AIDE. From Android-IDE, "Now you can write parts of your app or your whole app in C/C++ on your device. AIDE supports the Standard Android NDK toolchain (GCC 4.6 + Bionic, STL, ...). No changes are necessary if you want to build an app developed on a PC with Eclipse. C/C++ development is fully integrated: Build errors appear in the error list and files can easily be navigated to with Go to file. The editor supports C/C++ syntax highlighting."

Ars nails it: "The answer is that Google did announce what amounts to a fairly substantial Android update yesterday. They simply did it without adding to the update fragmentation problems that continue to plague the platform. By focusing on these changes and not the apparently-waiting-in-the-wings update to the core software, Google is showing us one of the ways in which it's trying to fix the update problem."

The world would've been a much different place - Apple would have been less dependant on Samsung for its chips, which probably would've meant less money for Samsung to develop its Galaxy business.

Glass is getting some love at Google I/O as well. New applications have been released - Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, Elle, Tumblr, and CNN. Perhaps more interesting: the newly announced Google Glass Developer Kit will allow offline applications and direct hardware access - great for hacking and expanding Glass' potential. This kit will really allow hackers to put Glass through its paces.

Absolutely fascinating stuff. I'm a League of Legends player, and to be honest, the community isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. I'm happy Riot games has the guts to employ science to address the issue.

According to the International Data Corporation Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Android smartphone vendors and Apple shipped a total of 199.5 million units worldwide during 1Q13, up 59.1% from the 125.4 million units shipped during 1Q12." Windows Phone doubles from a few to twice few, iOS loser market share as its growth is slower than that of the overall market. BlackBerry continues slide into irrelevance.

If it's only about Steve Jobs being a little more dictatorial than usual, it's fine. All human beings are equal facing death. He's 55, got some serious health problems in the past, I bet he's not going over 80. It may sound creepy, but I'm really waiting for him to die.
Apple's story is strongly linked to that of Jobs. He's a man who's good at doing management, he finds good engineers and makes them work together. He's the sole man in Apple history who did that properly. But when he gets into engineering, his ideas are horrible.
Trying to convince Wozniak that the Apple II should not be offered much expandability capabilities ? Jobs.
Making pixel-perfect copy of Xerox's work in the Lisa, then destroying the initially innovative Macintosh project in order to make a Lisa clone after being fired from the Lisa team ? Jobs.
Making computers bundled with monitors so that when one of them fails one has to replace both ? Jobs.
Making the Apple III an unreliable machine by pushing unrealistic engineering ideas ? Jobs.
Forcing iPod users to deal with a media player and a USB/FW cable sold under a 40€ price tag in order to transfer data (WTF ?) ? Jobs.
Forcing people wanting Apple software to buy proprietary hardware (like those horrible multitouch trackpads which often get confused between zooming gestures and panning gestures when doing word processing) ? Jobs.
App store licensing terms, App store-only model ? Jobs.
At least it's what it sounds like when reading through Apple's history. I'm not yet perfectly sure of it. So when he dies, I'll carefully watch his successor's actions. Then I'll know if Apple in intrinsically evil or if, as I think, it's a bunch of good engineers governed by a horrible CEO.
And, in the latter case, I might get out of linux non-standardization hell and buy some Apple hardware or software then, provided that its successor removes all stupid limitations
